How to Know When You Need to Change Your Kitchen Around Posted on July 12, 2025 By Becky The kitchen is probably the room in your house that gets the harshest treatment in the house, especially if you cook a lot. This also means that, when you do get a kitchen renovation, it’s even more disruptive and difficult to deal with, and can come with a hefty price tag. Whether it’s due to wear and tear, a change in style choices, or broken equipment and changed needs, you will need to renovate your kitchen at some point. So how do you know when it’s time to renovate your kitchen and how can you save money, time, and stress while you do it? Wear and Tear While people change their kitchens around for different reasons, the average amount of time between renovations is typically every 10-15 years. This is because your kitchen might start to look dated, or your appliances might be out of date and due a renovation. While looks do matter, the most important thing to consider when it comes to your kitchen is functionality and safety. Over time, as appliances get older, they might be more likely to break down or develop other problems. You might also find that cabinets, countertops, and even flooring can get damaged, which can create trip hazards or other issues. So, you can change your kitchen basically whenever you like, there are no rules. Smaller cosmetic changes might be more often, like changing the cupboard doors or giving the kitchen a fresh coat of paint, but if your kitchen starts to lose functionality, it’s time for a bigger refurb. Ripout and Refresh When renovating your kitchen, you might want to completely rip out the old kitchen and replace it with another design. In this case, it helps to do some research and find designs that you like and that are timeless. German kitchen designers offer some fantastic styles that won’t go out of fashion any time soon. This is better than chasing quick trends because, by the time you’re used to the kitchen, it might already look dated. If you’re changing the layout, you may need to hire electricians and plumbers, especially if you are moving where appliances and sinks go. This can be a great way to make your kitchen more functional and add some more storage or countertop space. It always helps to plan your kitchen in advance so you know you’ll like it once it’s installed. Walls and Floors Finally, it’s also worth investing in the walls and flooring. Kitchen flooring should be easy to clean and relatively waterproof. Tiles are very popular for this reason, because they won’t be damaged by spillages and you can clean them quickly and easily. Plain walls are also a good idea, but you can have a bit of fun. It’s also a good idea to add a backsplash near your stovetop, so that the wall doesn’t get dirty when you’re cooking. Tiled or even metal backsplashes can work well.
