How to keep your kids healthy in winter Posted on November 5, 2024 By Becky As winter descends upon us, the excitement of the festive season often collides with the harsh realities of cold weather and increased illness. Little ones can face unique challenges during these months, from a decline in physical activity to heightened exposure to germs. However, you can take proactive steps to ensure your kids remain healthy and happy despite the chill. Below, we share some practical strategies to bolster your children’s health, enabling them to thrive throughout the season. Dress them appropriately Clothing can make all the difference in keeping your kids healthy, and layering is the key to getting it right throughout wintertime. Start with moisture-wicking materials to help them stay dry, followed by insulating layers and finish with a waterproof outer layer. Don’t forget hats, gloves and scarves to protect their extremities. Take care of their skin too, by using quality skincare products for kids to protect against dryness and irritation from the cold. Serve a balanced diet A rich and balanced diet supports your children’s immune system and fuels their energy levels. Incorporate as many seasonal foods such as carrots, squash, and citrus fruits as possible, as they provide essential vitamins and minerals that fend off illness. Consider introducing warming soups and stews that nourish and offer comfort during chillier days. You should also maintain their hydration levels, as the cold often masks their thirst. Encourage time spent outdoors While winter may bring colder temperatures, it’s crucial to encourage your little ones to spend time outdoors. Outdoor play allows them to engage in physical activity, which strengthens their immune system and boosts mood. Organise fun seasonal activities like sledding, ice skating or even simple walks in the park. If snow covers the ground, build snowmen or have snowball fights. Dressing them warmly with layers will allow them to stay comfortable while enjoying the fresh air. Teach effective handwashing Germs thrive in the winter months, so effective handwashing technique is essential knowledge for your children. Teach them to wash their hands regularly, especially before meals and after using the bathroom, and explain the importance of using soap and warm water, as well as scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. Instilling this habit early will enable them to understand the role of hygiene in preventing illness. If soap and water aren’t available, keep hand sanitiser handy, especially when you’re out and about. Ensure proper rest Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining your child’s health, particularly in the later months when their bodies need extra energy to fend off colds. Establish a consistent bedtime routine that allows for adequate rest, and encourage them to wind down with calming activities such as reading or listening to soft music. You might also want to create a cosy sleeping environment that promotes comfort. Make sure their bedding is warm, and consider using a humidifier to combat dry air, which can lead to respiratory issues. By following the advice we’ve shared above, you can help your little ones thrive in winter. With a little effort, you can turn this season into a time of health and joy, ensuring they emerge in spring full of vitality and cheer.
