How to include your pet in your next holiday Posted on August 2, 2024January 21, 2026 By Becky The traditional view of pets as mere housebound companions is outdated. For many of us, our furry companions are more like cherished family members than mere pets. Accordingly, the desire to include pets in holidays has become more prevalent than ever. Leaving them behind can be heartbreaking, and the thought of your furry friend missing you is enough to suck the joy out of your time away. So, what can you do to include them in your next holiday? We share some practical tips below. Choosing pet-friendly destinations There are many dog-friendly places you can go in the UK, ranging from the rugged coastlines of Cornwall to the scenic Lake District. But if you’d rather venture abroad, there are several European countries that are particularly welcoming to pets. France, for instance, is known for its dog-friendly culture, with many restaurants and cafes happily accommodating four-legged patrons. Italy and Germany also rank highly for pet-friendly holidays, offering numerous parks and outdoor spaces perfect for dogs. Stress-free travel arrangements Ensuring a smooth journey for both you and your pet is essential for an enjoyable experience. For road trips, plan regular breaks for exercise and toilet stops. If flying, book direct flights where possible to minimise stress and travel time. Some airlines offer pet-friendly cabins for small animals, while larger dogs may need to travel in the hold. For those seeking ultimate luxury, private jets for dogs provide unparalleled convenience and peace of mind for those who can afford it. Essential accessories Packing the right gear for your pet is crucial. A comfortable, well-fitting harness and lead are essential for dogs, keeping them comfortable and safe, whereas a secure carrier makes for convenient transportation for cats. In either case, a collapsible water bowl and portable food container allow for easy feeding on the go, while a familiar blanket or bed can provide comfort in new surroundings. Ensuring health and safety Before travelling, visit your vet for a health check and ensure all vaccinations are up to date. If travelling abroad, you’ll also need a relevant health certificate depending on where you’re going. Also, if your pet has pet insurance, you need to look if they’re covered while travelling and what exactly they’re covered for (it’s going to very on each company and their policies). Wherever you’re going, be sure to research the nearest veterinary services in your destination in case of emergencies, as well as any necessary medications and a basic first aid kit for animals. Maintaining routine While holidays are about new experiences, maintaining some semblance of routine can help reduce stress for your pet. Try to stick to regular feeding and exercise times, and bring familiar toys and bedding to create a sense of home in your accommodation. Allow time for your pet to acclimatise to unfamiliar surroundings before embarking on activities. By following the advice we’ve shared above, you can ensure an enjoyable and memorable experience for both you and your pet. With proper planning and preparation, including your furry friend in your travels can add an extra dimension of joy to your adventures.
