How to Get Ready for Horse Racing Season

Posted on March 13, 2025 By Becky

Horse racing season is upon us… and it’s an exciting time for everyone – fans, punters, and of course, those in the industry. Whether you’re thinking of heading out to live races, placing racing bets online on the biggest events, or you just want to keep up with all the action, preparation is key if you want to make the most of the season.

So, without further ado, here’s how you can get prepared for the upcoming season.

Know the Racing Calendar

Before you dive into the season, make sure you get familiar with all the major horse racing events. Some you might want to make note of include:

  • The Cheltenham Festival.
  • The Grand National.
  • The Kentucky Derby
  • Royal Ascot
  • The Breeders’ Cup

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg – there are races to enjoy all over the world! Make sure you mark their dates on your calendar so you don’t miss out on major racing action.

Research The Horses and Jockeys

Winning at horse racing isn’t just about picking the name you like the look of… if only it was that easy. No, you’ll need to do your research first:

  • Horse Form: Look at the horse’s recent race results, its finishing positions and its performances over similar distances and under similar conditions.
  • Jockey Statistics: Some jockeys are better on certain tracks or on certain horses.
  • Trainer: Top trainers usually have the best-performing horses.
  • Track Conditions & Surface: Some horses are better on turf while others prefer dirt or synthetic surfaces, etc.

There are lots of websites where you’ll find the most up-to-date statistics and expert analysis to help you out

Understand the Different Betting Markets

Horse racing offers all sorts of betting options – not just the winner. So, before you place your bets, make sure you understand the various options available to you:

  • Win Bet: Which horse will finish first.
  • Each-Way Bet: A bet that covers both a win and a place (i.e. coming in the top two or three).
  • Exacta/Forecast: Betting on which two horses you think will finish first and second – in the right order.
  • Trifecta/Treble: Picking who you think will finish in the top three positions in the right order.
  • Accumulator/Parlay: Different selections from different races, all of which will need to win to win the bet.

If you’re new to betting, you’re probably best starting out with a win or an each-way bet before you start experimenting with some of the trickier bets.

Set a Budget

You need to properly manage your bankroll if you really want to enjoy the horse racing season without having any financial stresses to worry about.

Make sure you set a budget for the season and stick to it. This means that you’ll need to avoid chasing losses by placing reckless bets out of panic. As well as this, you might want to think about using a proper staking plan, like only betting 5% of your budget, for example, to keep you in the game.

If you manage your money and bet responsibly, you’ll get maximum enjoyment with minimal risk.

Get Ready for a Day at the Races

One of the best things about horse racing season is actually getting to a race. If you do want to head to the tracks, you need to be prepared.

First, think about the dress code – as many of the top venues, like Royal Ascot, have strict dress codes, so you need to check! And remember, the weather can be as unpredictable as the sport – be prepared for rain or shine… or anything in-between.

Make sure you arrive nice and early so you can explore and place your bets without having to rush – and when you do get there, make sure you pick up a racecard to get all the details on the day’s events. Of course, there will be plenty of food and drink options, but if you’re on a budget, you might want to bring a few snacks with you – as it won’t be cheap!

A well-planned race day can make the whole experience 100% better!

Ultimately, preparation is key when it comes to making the most of the horse racing season. Make sure you know the schedules, do your research – and maybe even head out for a day at the tracks to experience it in person. There really is nothing quite like it!
