How to buy men’s clothing that actually gets worn

Posted on March 19, 2026 By Becky

Choosing the right gift is always a difficult undertaking, but buying clothes for someone can involve a lot of guesswork. Will they actually wear the item no matter what the weather? That jacket might look great on the hanger, but it may not suit their daily routine. And a technical piece could end up in the back of the wardrobe. The trick is to forget trends and consider how the recipient really lives. Do they spend their weekends hiking or their days walking the dog? Browsing a versatile selection of men’s jackets can make it easier, as styles are grouped by purpose, such as lightweight shells for wet weather or insulated parkas built for the cold. Here are some guidelines you can follow to make it easier to choose something practical and genuinely appreciated.

Hiker or commuter? Match the item to the activity level

When buying outerwear, the key is to match the jacket’s performance features to the wearer’s lifestyle so it becomes an essential part of their wardrobe. For someone who loves hiking in the Scottish Highlands, breathability and waterproof protection are critical. Technical jackets include waterproof ratings in millimetres (how much rain the fabric can withstand). Someone who mainly walks around town or commutes to work might prefer a softshell jacket for light, comfy protection from wind and drizzle.

Shoulder room and cuffs: The science of a good fit

Fit is the next consideration – and it goes beyond just the right size. A well-fitting coat allows room for layering in colder months when thick jumpers or hoodies are worn underneath. And when estimating size, consider shoulder movement – the wearer should be able to lift their arms comfortably without the jacket pulling across the underarms or the back. And make sure to get the sleeve length right – cuffs should reach the base of the thumb when arms are relaxed so that the wearer’s wrists are always covered.

Water-resistant or waterproof? Understand fabric and durability

A piece of clothing might be advertised as weatherproof, but there is a difference between waterproof materials. Water-resistant fabrics use a surface treatment (a Durable Water Repellent, or DWR) to repel light rain, while water-proof garments (such as GORE-TEX) feature specialised membranes that block water from penetrating. High-quality materials such as advanced waterproof membranes or reinforced fabrics provide stronger protection during heavy rain and harsh weather, and will last many seasons.

Zip pockets and insulation: Practical features that ensure everyday use

Beyond fabric and fit, even tiny design features can determine whether the recipient will wear the jacket every day. Pockets lined with fleece can make the difference between wearing it for a cold winter walk or leaving it on the coat rack. If the wearer doesn’t want to carry a backpack or bag, then they’re more likely to reach for a jack if it has internal zip pockets. Also, adjustable hoods are useful during sudden rain showers, and drawcord hems allow wearers to trap warmth when temperatures drop.

Black or orange? Decide which colour suits their activities

Colour can also influence how often a garment is worn. Neutral tones (think navy, charcoal, or olive) will integrate easily into any wardrobe. They’re also the most versatile and transition easily from countryside walks to casual evenings out. Brighter colours such as orange and yellow are essential for visibility in outdoor environments, particularly in mountain settings or low light.

The smart way to shop for men’s outerwear

Choosing the right clothing gift for a man can turn into a real guessing game. But by focusing on lifestyle, fit, and practical features rather than just trends, you can settle on an item that they’ll reach for every time they leave the house, no matter what the weather forecast.
