How to Be Comfortable on Your Period

Posted on December 13, 2024May 2, 2025 By Becky

Periods can be uncomfortable for many, but with the right strategies, you can significantly ease the discomfort and boost your overall well-being during this time. Whether it’s dealing with cramps, managing fatigue, or simply maintaining your normal routine, these tips will help you feel more comfortable on your period.

Wear Comfy Clothes

One of the simplest ways to feel comfy during your period is to wear the right clothing. Go for loose-fitting garments, such as soft leggings or oversized jumpers, which reduce pressure on your abdomen and allow for greater freedom of movement. Breathable fabrics, like cotton, are particularly beneficial as they help to keep you feeling fresh.

Manage Menstrual Cramps

Cramps are one of the most common complaints during a period. To ease the discomfort, apply a hot water bottle or a heating pad to your tummy. The warmth helps to relax the muscles of the uterus and reduces cramping. Over-the-counter pain relief, like ibuprofen or paracetamol, can also be effective when taken as directed. If you prefer natural remedies, think about drinking herbal teas like chamomile or ginger, which have anti-inflammatory properties.

Use the Right Menstrual Products

Choosing the right menstrual products can make a world of difference. Whether you prefer pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, select products that suit your body and lifestyle. Some people find period sleep shorts and underwear to be particularly comfortable, as they eliminate the need for additional products and offer a sense of security. If you’re unsure which option is best for you, experiment to find what works.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Your diet can play a big role in how you feel during your period. Eating foods that have lots of magnesium, such as leafy greens, nuts, and dark chocolate, can help alleviate cramps and improve your mood. Staying hydrated is equally important, as dehydration can worsen bloating and fatigue. Limit your intake of salty or processed foods, as these can lead to water retention and discomfort.

Stay Active

While it may be tempting to curl up in bed, light exercise can be surprisingly effective at reducing period discomfort. Activities like yoga, walking, or gentle stretching can promote blood flow and release endorphins, which act as natural painkillers. However, listen to your body and avoid overexerting yourself if you’re feeling particularly tired.

Put Rest and Relaxation First

Fatigue is a common symptom during periods, so it’s essential to prioritise rest. Aim to get plenty of sleep, as this allows your body to recover and maintain energy levels. Incorporate relaxation techniques, like deep breathing exercises or meditation, into your routine to help reduce stress and promote a sense of calm.

Build a Self-Care Routine

Periods are an excellent time to prioritise self-care. Have a warm bath with Epsom salts to soothe cramps, pamper yourself with a skincare routine, or simply spend time doing something you enjoy. A little indulgence can go a long way in improving your mood.

By paying attention to your body’s needs, making thoughtful choices about your lifestyle, and allowing yourself time to rest, you can navigate your menstrual cycle with greater ease. Don’t forget that every body is different, so find the strategies that work best for you and prioritise your well-being.
