How Can You Cheer Up a Mum in Her Postpartum Period? Posted on August 28, 2025 By Becky They say that bringing up a child often requires the help of many people. But not a lot of attention is given to the importance of taking care of the mother, which is why it’s not surprising that one in seven women experience depression within the first year of giving birth. So if you know someone who’s about to give birth, it’s very important to offer her all the love and support she needs during this important time in her life – from giving her a postpartum recovery pack to giving her your time. Here’s what you can do: Surprise her with little gifts. Most of the attention shifts to the baby after birth, leaving the mum feeling neglected and isolated. One of the easiest ways to make her feel that she also matters is by surprising her with little gifts to help with her recovery. A postpartum recovery pack is an amazing gift to help her ease into her postpartum body by promoting as much comfort as possible. If she’s struggling with milk supply, you can give her lactation cookies or drinks to boost it. These gifts may be small to you, but it will mean so much to her, for sure. Listen to her intentionally. A lot of women feel unheard because everyone is caught up with taking care of the baby. This could lead to bottling up of feelings that could easily turn into postpartum blues and then depression. Before that happens, make sure that you offer your ears to listen to her intentionally. Open up the conversation with simple questions like “Did you get enough sleep today?” or “How are you feeling?” This will help her share her thoughts and feelings, so you know exactly how to help her. Be present in the moment and learn how to validate her feelings, so she knows that she has someone who understands her. Take off some work from her. Being a mum while running a household is not an easy task. When she barely has enough sleep and still needs to do household chores or run errands, that could easily overwhelm her. So if you can, offer to help with daily tasks like running errands or doing groceries so she can take that off her to-do list. You can also offer to care for the baby for a few hours so the new mum can get uninterrupted rest to recharge her body and help with her recovery. You can also cook meals for her that she can just reheat whenever needed, so she doesn’t do all the meal prep herself. These little things can really have a huge impact in any new mum’s life since they free up time that she can use to rest, take care of herself or just take a much-needed breather in between the chaos of motherhood.
