How Can You Be Eco-Friendly And Make Money At The Same Time?

Posted on April 9, 2025May 6, 2026 By Becky

Being eco-friendly and making money seem like two different worlds. On the one hand, you have to reduce your resource use, and on the other hand, you have to increase it.

But what if it was possible to do both and they didn’t cancel each other out?

Well, it just might be. But it requires the right approach. You’ve got to have one eye on being eco-friendly and the other on business opportunities.

Grow Your Own Local Produce

Growing your own produce and selling it locally can be a lot of fun. What’s more, you don’t always need much land. Just a small parcel is often enough to provide all the food a person needs for the entire year.

The best crops to grow are those that aren’t usually available locally and are shipped in from abroad instead. These do the most damage to the environment, so if you can provide people with an alternative, that’s always good news.

Upcycle Your Waste

At the same time, you might want to upcycle your waste. If there’s a table or chair that’s looking worse for wear, there’s a chance that you can restore it and bring it back to its former glory.

All this requires is some craft skills and an online selling account. Once you have these, you can either upcycle the item and keep it or sell it to someone else. Either way, you don’t have to buy any new furniture.

Sell Metal

Selling scrap metal is another option you might want to explore. If you have a lot of the stuff on your property, people will often break it down for you and pay you a premium for the privilege.

The most valuable scrap metals are things like copper and tungsten. Scrap dealers will pay a pretty penny for these (especially if there is proof that the underlying metals are present). However, they will also pay for iron, steel, and aluminium, meaning that almost any scrap can earn you money.

Start A Car-Sharing Business

At the same time, you could start a car-sharing business. This sort of thing has more potential to scale in the long term.

Car-sharing works by hosting a pool of vehicles and renting them out to people when they need them. It’s not a new idea, but it could be green if it were electric.

The daily rates might be high to break even, but most people who don’t have their own car don’t mind paying a little extra for rare trips to Blackpool.

Teach Eco-Friendly Skills

Coming at it from another angle, you could decide to teach people your eco-friendly skills in person or online. These are ideal for educating the community on topics like sustainable living and green DIY cleaning methods.

Launch A Green Consulting Business

Finally, you could do the same for companies, teaching them how to make their operations more eco-friendly. Most will be making mistakes, so setting up these services can sometimes be a godsend. Simply brush up on your knowledge and use any prior qualifications to your advantage when pitching.
