Here’s How To Cut Your Contouring Time In Half Without Compromising Appearances

Posted on January 14, 2026 By Becky

You’ve probably heard a thing or two about the power of makeup contouring by now. This technique, which involves the use of makeup to sculpt and define facial features, can add definition, detract from problem areas, and generally help you to look and feel better. Unfortunately, a detailed contouring routine can also take between 20 and 40 minutes.

After all, this makeup method sees you singlehandedly altering your look for the better. You may need to pay close attention to areas including your nose, jawline, and cheekbones, all of which require dedicated effort to ensure contouring that’s just right. Even on a quick day, this will probably take a whole lot longer than simply applying eyeshadow.

But, what if we were to tell you that it is possible to cut the time you spend contouring in half without compromising all-important appearances?  Simply keep on reading to find out how.

# 1 – Start on Strong Foundations

If you spend ten minutes applying foundation and concealer before you can even begin the contouring process, then you’ll inevitably take longer here. Luckily, you can remove those preliminary preparations by simply starting with strong skin-based foundations.

Perfecting your skincare routine, especially when it comes to hydration, is key to making this possible. That way, your skin will be ready to contour, right out of bed.

# 2 – Focus on Key Areas

Full-face contouring takes inevitable time, but remember that you don’t need a full face map every time. You may even find that your contouring is more effective when limited to particular problem areas.

Most commonly, people benefit from focusing on contouring around areas that require shading and shaping, which could include the sides of your nose, your cheekbones, and your chin or jawline. Prioritising just one or two of these locations can speed things up, while still transforming the entirety of your look.

# 3 – Optimise Your Technique

The less precise your contouring, the longer it’ll take to achieve the look you want. Optimizing your technique with the right approach, products, and tools is an obvious way around that problem.

In terms of products, for instance, you should find that cream or liquid formulas are far quicker to apply and perfect than powder alternatives. Equally, multi-purpose tools that allow you to switch between required brushes can bring a real seamlessness to your process.

# 4 – Seek More Permanent Solutions

If you often get caught up on perfecting problematic contouring areas, then it may also be worth seeking more permanent solutions that also serve to lessen your contouring requirements.

For instance, cheekbone fillers can do a lot of the work of contouring for you, while nasal reconstruction can ensure the right nose shape to fit your contouring shadows. Simply consider which areas of contouring tend to take you the longest, and whether these longer-lasting alternatives could make your daily routine a little easier.

Contouring can transform your look, but make sure it doesn’t eat up your time with these top tips.
