Fun And Easy Ways to Design A Relaxing Garden

Posted on May 21, 2025May 21, 2025 By Becky

Isn’t it lovely to have a beautiful garden that feels calm, happy and relaxing? Don’t you want a garden filled with soft grass, colourful flowers and green plants? If yes, then why wait? You can make your own little escape from this busy world easily in your backyard. Don’t worry about the space being big or small, creating a relaxing garden doesn’t have to be hard for you.

We have prepared a guide where you can learn some ways to transform your outdoor space into a calm, heavenly retreat. We have used Stepping Stones, pavers, lights and native plants in a unique style.

Let’s read in detail.

  1. Start with a Garden Plan

Before you start planting gorgeous green plants, make sure you have a good plan in hand. The best way is to draw a map, placing each element where you want it to be. Once you have a blueprint of your design, your dream garden is halfway complete. Here are a few points you should remember:

  • Take a walk in your backyard and notice where the sunshine hits the most and where the shade is. It will help you separate plants which need more sunlight and others.
  • Pick a place to place a bench, where you can sit and enjoy the beauty of your garden.

The plan on paper doesn’t have to be perfect, but it will help you start.

  1. Choose the Right Plants

Plants are the superstar of your garden. They bring freshness, colours, life and even sweet fragrance to the outdoor space. Therefore, be mindful while choosing plants for your garden. You can also mix tall and short plants, some green bushes and colourful flowers. If you like plant herbs such as mint or basil, as they smell good and you can also use them for cooking.

  1. Cosy Sitting Areas

Cosy sitting areas are a must because they help you relax and feel the serenity of nature. You can add a wooden bench, a hanging chair or even big floor cushions.

You should place your seat under the shady tree or near fragrant flowers. To make the space cosier, add some colourful cushions and a small coffee table to keep your book or cup of coffee.

  1. Magical Paths

To make your garden feel like a brief adventure, make sure to add a pathway! To bring a contemporary and minimalist look, you can use Granite pavers. Choose only a reputable Granite pavers supplier in Sydney for premium quality. However, if you want to bring old-world charm or make the pathway fun, consider adding stepping stones. Some other materials you can use are concrete, porcelain, wood and more.

You can also use wooden planks as stepping stones and arrange them in a zig-zag manner. It will not only guide everyone through your garden but also prevent you from stepping on grass or muddy areas.

  1. Add Water Features

Water can turn chaos into calm. The gentle sound of trickling or flowing water relaxes the mind and soul. You don’t need a big pond or a fancy fountain as the centrepiece of your garden, a small water bowl or birdbath is enough. You can place your water feature somewhere you can see and hear it. If you place a birdbath, you can enjoy the gentle chirping of birds.

  1. Playful Lighting

Natural light will keep your garden cosy throughout the day without a doubt. However, to enjoy the same warmth at night, you can use some lighting, such as fairy lights, lanterns or solar lights. You can wrap fairy lights around a tree, hang some lamps above your seating area or place the lantern nearby on the floor. Your garden will look dreamy and fascinating. You can even plan a romantic dinner there!

  1. Add a Personal Touch

After following all the above fun methods, there’s no doubt your garden is looking amazing. However, it still lacks one thing – your personal touch! Yes, you read it right. Your garden will be complete when it has some parts showcasing your personality. Here are some things you can do:

  • Paint your pots in bright colours.
  • Add some funny signboards or quotes.
  • Hang wind chimes to create a sweet melody that sings with the air.
  • You can use some old stuff, like a wheelbarrow, as your flower bed at one corner to create a rustic charm.
  • Turn glass jars into candle holders for those special nights.

These small touches will make your space look special and unique.

  1. Low-Maintenance

No one is asking you to add all the elements. The goal is to create a relaxing space, not a cluttered one. Therefore, you should build a garden that doesn’t require constant care or a lot of your time. You can do the following to keep the garden in mint condition:

  • Mulch your garden beds to stop the growth of weeds and keep the soil moist.
  • You should use a drought-tolerant plant.
  • Use a drip watering system. It will save water and keep your plants happy.

With some smart moves, you can keep your garden in good condition and enjoy your free time.

Wrapping Up

Following the above-mentioned fun ideas, you can easily transform your backyard into a cosy, warm and inviting garden. Also, it doesn’t matter whether your space is big or small, you can always use these ideas to make it look stunning.

You should start with a simple plan, choose the right plants, add cosy seating areas, some warm lights and a pathway made of stepping stones. Your garden will then become a perfect spot to relax. You can also explore the wide range of products and choose any natural stone for your garden paving from top suppliers in Sydney. Are you ready?
