Extending your Living Space – What Are the Options? Posted on May 2, 2024 By Becky If you are the head of a growing family and you are looking for ways to add living space, you certainly aren’t alone; for the sake of this article, we are assuming you have ruled out selling up and buying a bigger house. Here are some of the options you have to add living space to your home. Loft conversion – Definitely the cheapest way to add living space; a loft conversion adds considerable living space and should you be interested in an all-inclusive quote, ask a local builder to pay you a visit. Price depends on the scope of the project and it can be completed in 3-4 days, as the walls are already in place. Single storey extension – With Velux skylights in a flat roof, you have all the natural lighting you need; typically a brick-and-mortar structure that is made to blend in with the main home. The single room can be used as a guest room, a study centre or a home office. Two-storey extension – A large two-storey extension can give you 4 extra rooms, which is more than enough for any family. Of course, such a structure is never going to be cheap, yet the added value will be significant and will increase over the years. Modular home – You can buy these in kit form; build a concrete base, have the kit delivered and build your very own modular unit that can be used for a range of things. There are Australian companies that offer a range of prefab homes and bungalows. There will be something to suit every occasion, whether a spare bedroom or a man cave, everything is possible when you order a custom kit home. Here is an interesting article about home extensions. Container home – You can choose between a 20ft or 40ft container that is fashioned to your specifications. The great thing is you can relocate the structure easily, should the need arise and they look stunning when finally finished. If you design a 4-5 unit, you can have a large home that really turns heads, although a container home is never going to be cheap. Basement – If you have a basement, this can be fitted out to your specifications’ talk to a builder with basement experience and they can carry out a survey. Some colonial properties have large basements that are great for storage. Kit garden shed – Ideal for a craftsman’s workshop, build a concrete base and the supplier will deliver, assemble the structure and connect the utilities. All you have to do is get your equipment in and start a project. As you can see, there are quite a few options available to the Australian homeowner and this would be a home improvement that boosts the value of the property. Choose your builder wisely and you will get value for money and add the extra living space you require.
