Everyday habits to help boost your credit score

Posted on October 30, 2025 By Becky

If you don’t feel like you’re on top of your finances, the idea of building your credit score might sound like a distant goal. But the truth is, it often comes down to small everyday choices that steadily show lenders you’re reliable.

Make these changes part of your routine to improve your financial standing without turning life upside down.

Pay on time, even the small bills

Lenders want to see that you handle commitments responsibly, and the most obvious signal is whether you pay on time. That doesn’t just mean any loans or credit card balances. Your mobile contract, broadband, utility bills and even buy-now-pay-later instalments can influence how credit agencies rate you.

Setting up direct debits makes sure you never slip up by accident. Missing a payment by just a few days can leave a mark that lingers for years, while a clean record of punctual payments helps to steadily strengthen your score over time.

Keep credit usage under control

How much of your available credit you use has an impact on your score. If you regularly max out your card, it suggests you may struggle to manage borrowing, even if you always repay.

Aim to use less than 30% of your available limit if you can. For example, if your card limit is £1,000, keeping your balance under £300 shows discipline and reassures lenders.

If you’ve had problems in the past, credit cards for bad credit can be a useful tool, as long as you can clear it in full each month. These kinds of products can help to rebuild your record when used properly. Make sure they’re affordable for you before applying, as falling into arrears will damage your credit score.

Register where you live

It may sound simple, but being on the electoral roll at your current address is a quick and easy win. Lenders use it to confirm your identity and address history.

If you’ve moved recently and forgotten to update it, you might cast doubt on your applications unnecessarily. You can register online in a few minutes, and it costs nothing.

Spread applications over time

Applying for lots of credit in quick succession can signal desperation, even if you just want the best deal. Hard searches leave a footprint on your credit file that lenders can see.

If you’re shopping around for a loan or mortgage, use comparison tools that run ‘soft’ searches, which don’t show on your report. Then apply only once you’ve narrowed down the most suitable option.

Check your report regularly

Mistakes happen. Old debts may still appear as active, or someone else’s account could accidentally be linked to your file. Checking your credit report with the main agencies gives you a clear picture of what lenders see.

If you spot an error, you can raise a dispute to correct it. Staying on top of your file means you’re less likely to be caught off guard by a surprise rejection.
