moving house as a family

Easiest Ways to Move Home as a Family

Posted on October 24, 2025 By Becky

There are few processes in life that can impose quite the same level of stress and anxiety as a house move. If you’re moving into a new home as a family, then the disruption might be considerable. As such, it’s worth investing a little bit of time and energy into a good plan. This will allow you to stay organised throughout the process, and avoid all of the common sources of stress.

But how might we approach this task? Let’s take a look at a few important things to bear in mind.

Start with a Decluttering Plan

If you’re going to box up all of your possessions and transport them to an entirely different building, then you’ll want to first get rid of all of the items you don’t actually want to keep. As such, it’s a good idea to declutter before you get the move started.

Move from room to room, discarding unwanted items as you pack. Do this ahead of time, and you’ll feel that natural sense of progress that comes with letting go of clutter. As you work your way through the home, your load will, quite literally, lighten.

Organising Packing and Labelling

If you get to your new home and none of your boxes are labelled, then you’ll waste considerable time and energy working out where everything belongs. If your boxes are not appropriately organised, then the problem might be worse by an order of magnitude.

Invest in a marker pen. Make sure that you pack each box with items that are going to be unpacked in a particular room. Then, finally, set aside an additional box containing the essentials you’ll need on day one. You won’t want to go rooting around in search of toilet paper when you really need it.

Preparing Children for the Move

For children, moving can be an exciting process – but also a daunting one. If they’re uncertain about moving to a new school and making new friends, then they might face a difficult period of readjustment.

You can help drive down the uncertainty by involving your children in the moving process. Make sure that they know exactly what’s going to happen, and allow them to contribute to a few key decisions – like what colour you’re going to paint their bedroom.

Settling into Your New Home

Settling in requires more than just unpacking. It means getting yourself truly comfortable. You might do this by a process of gradual acclimation. However, there are a few rituals and tricks that you might use to speed things along.

Try to create positive memories in the home as quickly as possible. When the space is associated with small parties, games, and treats, then it will be much easier to fall in love with. Buying a games console and a new television is often very effective.

FAQs About Moving Into a New Home as a Family

1. How early should we start planning a family move?
Ideally, you should start planning at least 6–8 weeks before your move. This gives you time to declutter, book movers, gather packing supplies, and prepare your children emotionally for the transition.

2. What’s the best way to make moving day less stressful?
Organisation is key. Label all boxes by room, keep a “day one” essentials box handy, and make a checklist to track progress. Hiring professional movers or enlisting friends can also help lighten the load.

3. How can I help my children adjust to a new home?
Talk openly about the move, visit the new neighbourhood in advance if possible, and involve your kids in decisions like decorating their new rooms. Familiar routines and small comforts, like their favourite toys or bedtime stories, can help them settle faster.

4. How do I keep things organised during packing?
Pack one room at a time and label boxes clearly with their contents and destination room. Use colour-coded labels for each room to make unpacking even easier. Keep important documents and valuables in a separate, easy-to-reach bag.

5. What should go in the “essentials box” for moving day?
Include basics like toilet paper, snacks, cleaning supplies, chargers, pyjamas, a change of clothes, toiletries, and any medications. If you have kids, add comfort items like a favourite blanket or stuffed toy.

6. How can I declutter effectively before moving?
Use the “keep, donate, sell, or toss” method. Be ruthless — if you haven’t used an item in a year, it’s probably time to let it go. Decluttering before you pack will make the move quicker and cheaper.

7. How can we make our new home feel comfortable quickly?
Unpack essentials first, set up cosy areas like the living room or bedrooms, and add personal touches such as photos, candles, or familiar décor. Hosting a small family meal or movie night can also help everyone feel at home faster.

8. Should I hire a moving company or do it myself?
It depends on your budget, time, and how much you need to move. Hiring professionals can save stress and time, especially with heavy furniture, but DIY moves work well for smaller households or short distances.

9. How do we manage pets during a family move?
Keep pets calm by maintaining routines and moving them last. Set up a quiet space with their bed, food, and toys in the new home so they can adjust gradually to the new environment.

10. What’s the best way to create positive memories after moving?
Celebrate the move with something special — like a family pizza night, exploring your new neighbourhood, or decorating together. Building fun memories early helps everyone feel settled and connected to the new space.
