Doing It Differently: Getting Hitched in Your Own Way

Posted on April 3, 2025November 30, 2025 By Becky

Weddings are changing. Quietly. Gently. But undeniably. There’s a shift happening—one that doesn’t make headlines but leaves footprints on hearts. More and more, couples are tossing out the rulebook and choosing something that looks a little less perfect and a whole lot more personal. No more matching napkins to centerpieces. No more “You have to do it this way.” Instead, a question: What actually matters to us?

Intention Over Imitation

You don’t have to wear white. You don’t need 200 people watching you slice cake. You can skip the limo, the garter toss, the seating chart stress. You can just… breathe.

Weddings are no longer just events. They’re turning into experiences, stitched together from real moments—raw, funny, tender. Maybe you get ready together in your pajamas. Maybe your dog’s your best man. Maybe you hike to the top of a trail and say your vows while your breath catches from more than just the altitude.

This is where weddings are heading. Away from pageantry. Toward presence. Toward moments that make your heart stop for a second—in the best way.

Ditch The Usual Script

There’s no “right” way to do this. That’s the beauty of it.

Forget timelines printed on cardstock and orchestrated entrances. Forget formal wear if it doesn’t feel like you. Maybe your wedding day starts with coffee and waffles. Maybe it ends with your guests wrapped in blankets around a fire pit, telling stories and laughing until they can’t anymore.

A lot of people are choosing to elope. Not because they don’t care—but because they care deeply. So much that they want to do it on their own terms. On a mountain. In a cabin. On a frozen lake at sunrise. It doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s love story. Because it isn’t.

And if the idea of bridesmaids in matching dresses makes your skin crawl—skip it. Maybe your people don’t want titles. Maybe they just want to stand next to you in whatever makes them feel good. That’s enough. If you do choose to elope you don’t have to wear suited and booted wedding wear. You can wear whatever you want on the beach. While there’s nothing wrong with a custom suit for your wedding. You might want to dispense with that if you’re heading to Vegas.

And if the idea of bridesmaids in matching dresses makes your skin crawl—skip it. Maybe your people don’t want titles. Maybe they just want to stand next to you in whatever makes them feel good. That’s enough.

Your ceremony can be five minutes long or an hour of shared laughter and tears. Your reception might be a potluck. Or a backyard concert. Or a picnic in the woods. Do what makes your heart feel full.

Practical Magic In Planning

Of course, love doesn’t totally cancel out logistics. You’ll still have to find a wedding venue that fits the feel you’re going for. But even that can be an adventure. Maybe it’s your grandma’s garden. Or the tiny community theatre where you had your first date. Something real. Something with a heartbeat.

And with small weddings, you’ve got space to invest in the details that actually mean something. A handmade ring box. A film photographer who just gets your vibe. A dinner where every bite tastes like a memory.

There’s no pressure to impress anymore. Just permission to make it yours.

Celebrate Your Way

Here’s the thing: joy doesn’t live in perfection. It shows up in the messy, in the unexpected, in the tiny in-between moments that no one plans for—but everyone remembers.

So dance in your boots. Say your vows in the rain. Eat burgers and drink local beer from mason jars if that’s your kind of fancy. Laugh loudly. Cry freely. Forget what anyone else says a wedding should be.

You’re not just getting married. You’re telling the world, “This is us.” And the world? It’s ready for that.
