This dynamic festival is celebrating its 30^th birthday this year so promises to be even bigger and better than ever before. Have you heard the one about which city has the biggest Fringe Festival in the world? Dublin of course, it’s “Doublin’ every minute!” Joking aside, it’s actually Edinburgh which hosts the world’s largest Fringe, and though the Scottish capital might boast that claim, fantastic Fringe Festivals are of course not just about size. Creative, inclusive curation, ground-breaking performances and the ability to welcome audiences whilst simultaneously challenging perceptions are what makes a Fringe fabulous, and the Dublin Fringe Festival – which will run this year between Saturday 6^th and Sunday 21^st September – guarantees all that and more.

What Is A Fringe?

It’s a bangin’ (Fringe/bangs? See what I did there? I can’t help it, the puns keep coming!) open-access arts festival that offers a platform for artists and performers to showcase a wide range of their work. Fringe – the clue is in the name, being on the periphery or ‘fringe, of the mainstream – festivals are often experimental and alternative in nature and free from the constraints, selection processes and judging panels of more prestigious and traditional arts festivals. Established in 1995, Dublin Fringe Festival is an agenda-setting, multi-disciplinary arts festival which, in the words of its curators, seeks out and presents contemporary, playful and provocative new work made by Irish and international artists of vision. The festival every September is an annual celebration spread throughout the city, but the Festival team also provide year-round support to artists. New work in Ireland s championed and the Festival is committed to talent and artform development. It provides a stage for new and emerging artists in Ireland to showcase their work and offers artists at all points of their career an opportunity to challenge and invigorate their practice.

I love being surrounded by the hubbub of festival feeling, but it can be exhausting! If you plan to get your culture fill in Dublin this September be sure to take some breaks from the scene to enjoy other aspects of Dublin. Croke Park is an excellent green space to have some down time and enjoy some nature. Dublin pubs and bars are a great spot to decompress from some avant garde theatre and digest what you have seen over a pint or a cocktail (try out 4 Dame Lane for contemporary cocktails and regular live music). Or why not pair a Fringe visit with the classics with a rip to highlights like the Book of Kells?
