Astonishing Ways To Create New Atmospheres In Your Interiors

Posted on May 28, 2026 By Becky

Returning to a home that feels the same every night can be a comforting experience for a lot of people, but it can also make life feel dull. Sometimes you want to change the vibe and atmosphere to suit your mood and even the season. That’s the topic we turn to in this post.

If you’re the sort of person who loves to constantly play around with rooms and adjust them to your liking, then this post is for you. We take a look at some of your options for how to refresh your interiors and give them the ambiance you want.

Start with color drenching

If you want to give your rooms a different atmosphere, you might want to start with the simple process of colour drenching. The idea is to drench a room in various colours to change how it feels when you walk in.

Colour drenching is more than just painting the walls or the baseboards. It also involves giving colour to the radiator doors and even ceilings. It is all about painting rooms or adding features that are roughly the same colour. You do not have to use the exact same tone, but if you can relate all of the shades to each other, it can create a striking effect.

What is interesting about colour drenching is that it removes the harsh visual features of white trim. Instead, the boundaries of the room seem to recede, and you almost end up with more space. It can be moody, cosy, and cave-like at the same time, so you can achieve multiple objectives with a single palette.

Introduce glow lighting

Another way to transform the atmosphere in your rooms is to introduce glow lighting instead of illuminating the room from a single light source up above or using harsh spotlights. Focus instead on leveraging the principle of glow.

One of the most innovative ways people are using glow-level lighting these days is by introducing floor-level LEDs. These run as strips along the floor and can go behind the TV box, around the walls, and even up onto the ceiling. You might also want to implement low-wattage mushroom lamps. These can be tucked away on shelves or localised to specific tables in the room and cast a low-level light.

If you can see bare light bulbs from anywhere that you’re sitting, you’re probably making the wrong atmospheric choices for the room. Bare light bulbs are harsh in appearance and can skew the distribution of light to specific parts of the room and break the atmosphere. Obviously, you don’t want that, so cover them up with shades where possible.

Microzone with textures

Something that more people are doing these days is micro-zoning their rooms so that they have more tactile friction. The idea is to use a mixture of rough, smooth, hard, and soft textures throughout the room.

For example, I like to use residential painting near me to create the soft, smooth backdrop to my rooms. In the foreground, I add things like brushed chrome, polished marble, and heavy linen. The combination of these materials means the room can serve many atmospheric purposes. It is not just a formal space or somewhere to be cosy, but can be a combination of both.

If you ever visit a high-end hotel, you will notice they use the same tactics. Often, you will have a marble-topped vanity and a hardwood floor combined with fresh linens and comfortable rugs. It is the perfect balance of luxury aesthetics and tactile sensations.

You will also notice that when you make proper use of textures, it creates completely distinct atmospheres at different times of day. When the pale light of the morning comes into the room, it feels crisp and clean. Once the evening light descends or it is night time and there is a log fire burning, everything feels closer and more intimate.

Use an overhead canopy

Another thing you might want to do to create a different atmosphere in your home is to leverage the idea of an overhead canopy. The goal here is to bring nature indoors and lower cortisol levels significantly.

Overhead canopies are a bit different than including a potted plant in the corner or a bonsai tree next to your bed. They usually involve setting up some sort of rig in your room and then using that to enable more plant growth, a bit like an indoor pergola.

It’s a good idea to use trailing plants like English ivy, heart leaf, philodendron, and pothos. Putting these on high ceilings or training them to grow over your scaffolding can be a great way to transform how your interiors feel and give them a completely different vibe. You will have to sweep up the odd twig and leaves from time to time if you take this approach, but it can be well worth it. Just make sure you keep the organic elements away from delicate furniture or luxury fabrics.

Think about your olfactory layer

Finally, you’ll want to think about the smell that you have whenever you walk into a room. You’ll know from past experience that the way a room smells can have a profound emotional effect on you.

Most homes have a generic clean smell, or there’s a faint whiff of artificial plug-ins. These are a missed opportunity. There are so many ways you can introduce natural, better-smelling scents to your property.

For example, if you live in a character or historical home, these properties are best complemented by amber, tobacco leaf, and cedarwood scents. If you have a more modern home, you might want to go for hinoki wood or eucalyptus.

A great way to add more scent to your home is to spritz fabric linens and spray the back of your curtains. When breezes blow, it naturally lifts some of these scent compounds off the material and into the interiors of the room.

So there you have it, some of the astonishing ways to create new atmospheres in your interiors. Which of these are you going to try?
