Simple Ways to Create a More Productive Home Office

Posted on June 18, 2026 By Becky

Since so many of us are working from home these days, it’s super important to set up a workspace that feels good and helps us get things done. A well-thought-out home office can really make the difference between a day where you’re focused and one where you’re just frustrated. Turning a spare corner or room into a productive spot doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s really about making smart choices that support both your body and how you like to work.

Designing an Ergonomic Workspace

Sitting at a desk for hours can really do a number on your body if your setup isn’t quite right. Ergonomics is all about making your space work for you. Start with your chair; it should support your back, and your feet should be flat on the floor with your knees bent at a 90-degree angle.

Your desk and screen height are just as crucial. When you’re typing, your elbows should also be at a 90-degree angle, and the top of your monitor should be right at eye level or a little below it to avoid neck pain. If your current desk isn’t feeling quite right, there are lots of clever home office desk setup ideas that might spark some ideas. Often, a good adjustable chair and a monitor stand (or even just a stack of books!) can fix most problems without needing a whole new setup. For more tips, a helpful home office gear guide can guide you to the right tools for your space.

Smart Storage for Tech Gear

A messy desk often means a messy mind. Giving everything a specific home is key to keeping things tidy, especially when you’ve got expensive or delicate tech. Think beyond just a simple pen holder. You can use wall-mounted shelves to take advantage of vertical space, or get a desk with built-in drawers to keep your surfaces clear.

For special gear like cameras, microphones, drones, or other sensitive electronics, regular storage might not cut it. Leaving pricey equipment just rattling around in a drawer is a recipe for scratches and damage. This is where solutions like custom foam cutting come in handy. They let you create custom-fit inserts for your drawers or protective cases. That way, every piece of kit gets its own snug and secure spot, keeping it organised, easy to grab, and safe from bumps and knocks.

Cable Management Made Easy

A tangled mess of wires can instantly make your workspace feel chaotic. Good news, though, taming that cable spaghetti is way easier than you might think. First, unplug everything and figure out what each cable is for. Then, you’ve got a few simple ways to sort them out:

  • Reusable cable ties: These are awesome for bundling related wires together, like the ones for your monitor and computer.
  • Cable sleeves: A fabric sleeve can zip up a bunch of cables into one neat tube, which is perfect for wires running from your desk to a power outlet.
  • Under-desk cable trays: These metal or plastic baskets screw to the underside of your desk, giving you a hidden spot for power strips and any extra cable length.
  • Adhesive clips: Small clips that stick to the back of your desk or along a wall can guide cables exactly where you want them.

Decluttering Your Digital Life

Your physical workspace is only half the battle. A messy digital space can be just as distracting. Take some time to clean up your computer’s desktop by deleting old files and putting the rest into clearly named folders. A clean desktop background with just a few icons can actually make a big difference in how calm you feel.

Carry this tidiness over to your email inbox and task lists. Try the “one-touch” rule for emails: if you can deal with it in under two minutes, do it right away. If not, schedule a time to handle it or file it away. Use a digital task manager or even just a simple notebook to keep track of your to-dos, so important tasks don’t get lost.

Personalising Your Productive Zone

Finally, make the space truly yours. While the goal is to be productive, your office shouldn’t feel cold or impersonal. Adding a few personal touches can really boost your mood and make it a place you actually enjoy being in. A small plant can help clean the air and bring a bit of nature indoors. Place a lamp for better task lighting to help reduce eye strain, especially in the evenings.

A framed photo, a favourite piece of art, or even a colourful mug can add personality to your desk. The trick is to pick items that inspire you without becoming a distraction. Your home office should show off your professional side, but with all the comforts of being at home.

Creating your perfect workspace is an ongoing journey. Start with one area, like your chair or your cables, and see what a difference it makes. Just a few small tweaks can lead to huge improvements in how comfortable and focused you feel.
