Buying An Apartment Makes Sense, But Only If It Has These Features

Posted on April 26, 2026 By Becky

Opting to buy an apartment over any other type of property can be a smart move. It’s often cheaper, great for getting on the housing ladder, involves less maintenance and tends to be in much more convenient locations. However, not every apartment you come across is going to be worth buying. Some look great on the surface but are missing some important features you’ll regret in the long run.

24/7 Concierge Service

A super underrated feature of luxury apartments is having a concierge service. When you own a house, you constantly have to plan deliveries around when you’re in, or you end up missing an important delivery, which can be a hassle to get sorted. When living in an apartment, you don’t have to stress about getting deliveries at any time; if the building has some kind of concierge, they just take the package for you and store it. No more parcels dumped on your doorstep going missing.

In A Good Location

The main benefit of apartment living is the location. They’re purposely built in higher demand, more central areas. For you, this can mean you’re closer to the hustle and bustle of city life and might also have a shorter commute. This can be a massive advantage for your daily quality of life.

To get a house for a similar price in the same area, you’ll be looking at living somewhere much further out from the centre. What’s not worth it is getting an apartment much further out. Yes, it’ll be super cheap, but it doesn’t come with the added benefits that city life can bring.

Access To Outdoor Space

Normally, a massive downside that puts people off buying apartments is the lack of a garden. However most new apartments being built do have some outdoor space you can access. You don’t need a full-on garden – that comes with its own stresses.

The best solution is some kind of middle ground, like a balcony or access to a rooftop garden, which apartments now commonly have. It’s definitely something worth spending a bit of extra time searching for or spending a little bit more to get, as it’ll drastically improve your day-to-day life.

Good Natural Light

Apartments get a bad reputation for being dark and dingy, which, yes, some can be, but you can almost certainly find some with good natural light and ventilation. This matters more than you might think. Apartments with big windows, good amounts of daylight and decent airflow will make you feel better. It doesn’t have to be a massive space either, small apartments with good windows can also feel light and airy – almost to the point you might forget you’re in a building with other people.

If buying an apartment makes the most sense for you, make sure you get one that not only fits with your lifestyle, but that has features that will improve your quality of life. Choose wisely and keep in mind what will make the space more comfortable and enjoyable to live in.

Extra Tips When Buying an Apartment

Check the building management quality
A well-managed building can make a huge difference to your day-to-day experience. Look at how clean and well-maintained shared areas are.

Understand service charges and fees
Monthly or annual fees can add up quickly. Make sure you know exactly what you are paying for and whether it fits your budget.

Look at natural light and layout
A good layout and plenty of natural light can make even a smaller apartment feel more spacious and comfortable.

Consider future resale value
Think about what future buyers might want. Location, amenities, and layout all play a role in long-term value.

Check soundproofing
Noise from neighbours or the street can impact your quality of life. Visit at different times of day if possible.

Review parking and storage options
Secure parking and extra storage can add convenience and value, especially in busy areas.

Research the neighbourhood thoroughly
Look at local amenities, transport links, schools, and future developments that could affect the area.

FAQs About Buying an Apartment

What features should I prioritise when buying an apartment?
Focus on location, layout, natural light, building quality, and essential amenities that suit your lifestyle.

Are service charges worth it?
They can be, if they cover maintenance, security, and shared facilities. Always check what is included.

How important is location when buying an apartment?
Very important. It affects your daily life, convenience, and future resale value.

Should I buy a new build or an older apartment?
Both have pros and cons. New builds often need less maintenance, while older properties may offer more space or character.

How can I tell if an apartment is a good investment?
Look at the area’s growth potential, rental demand, and overall market trends.

What should I check before making an offer?
Review the lease terms, building condition, fees, and any planned maintenance work.

Is it better to buy or rent an apartment?
It depends on your financial situation and long-term plans. Buying can build equity, while renting offers more flexibility.
