AI Football Predictions: A Game Changer or Just Hype?

Posted on October 22, 2024 By Becky

As you’ll no doubt have noticed, artificial intelligence seems to have made its way into pretty much every industry imaginable. With unprecedented data analytic capabilities, more and more apps and business models based on AI are selling themselves as the next best thing.

This applies to the world of sporting predictions as well, but how useful actually are these tools? We’ve decided to take a closer look at football predictions in particular, to see whether it’s a game changer or just hype.

Do AI predictions actually work?

The first thing to say is that yes, AI-powered prediction models can be highly effective. For any kind of prediction to be at least somewhat accurate, you need to be able to go through huge amounts of data, pull out trends, and then see what those trends might be able to tell you about the outcomes of future events.

AI is perfect for this. By plugging in all kind of historical data, including player stats and past performances between specific team match ups, these kinds of tools are able to come up with complex analyses in a fraction of a second.

These tools aren’t clairvoyant

It’s important to note, as this in-depth look at the current state of AI football predictions shows, they aren’t magic – they still are just that, predictions – but when the models are designed properly, they can be more effective than other models or human predictions that can’t process the full picture.

As a result, you should treat them as you’d treat any other kind of prediction. Games as complex as football will never obey the outcomes of these kinds of models; underdogs can still pull off surprising wins, and the best players can still slip up. Don’t bet your house on something that a computer – no matter how smart it is – has told you will probably happen.

Not all AI tools actually use AI

It’s also critical that you do some research on any football prediction sites you’re considering using. A lot of sites will claim to use AI, simply because they know it will attract new customers and lend them an air of legitimacy.

See what kinds of models they use, and try to look up some reviews of any sites you’re looking at before you actually give them a go. Be highly cautious of any sites that seem to be overselling their capabilities – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

What does the future hold?

AI is still relatively new to the world of data analytics and sporting predictions, and we only expect it to become more competent. As these tools become integrated with real-time game updates, we’ll have real time predictions as well, which are able to capture many of the data-driven nuances behind likely outcomes. The betting industry will likely have to keep up with these changes, as betters gain an increasingly competitive edge.

AI football prediction tools definitely have the potential to become a real game changer, but it’s important that you use them wisely. Predictions are never 100% accurate, and you ultimately still need to make your own judgements based on what you find online.
