Addressing Misconceptions About Sexual Abuse in Society

Posted on September 21, 2025 By Becky

Sexual abuse is one of the most misunderstood topics in society.

Ask yourself…

How many times have you heard someone say victims are lying? Or that false reports are rampant? Stop for a moment to consider how these misconceptions hurt real survivors and keep them from justice.

Here’s the problem:

Society has created so many myths and misconceptions about sexual abuse, people don’t even know what to believe anymore. Worse yet? These false beliefs are why so many victims stay silent and why so many perpetrators walk free.

Just look at the recent investigation into facilities like Piney Ridge Center which shows exactly why sexual abuse investigations are so important.

When misconceptions and false beliefs cloud people’s judgement, real victims suffer while their stories get dismissed.

But here’s the thing…

The data paints a completely different picture than most people believe.

What you’ll discover:

  • The Real Truth About False Reporting
  • Why Most Victims Don’t Report
  • Common Myths That Harm Survivors
  • How Society Gets Sexual Abuse Wrong
  • The Statistics Don’t Lie

The False Reporting Myth: Setting The Record Straight

Curious to know the most damaging misconception about sexual abuse?

It’s the one that perpetuates victim-blaming.

That victims are probably lying.

This victim-blaming myth is everywhere. It’s assumed that false reports of sexual abuse happen all the time. Accusers are assumed to have hidden agendas. Real victims are assumed to behave differently.

The truth?

Only 2-8% of sexual assault reports are false — the same range as other crimes like burglary or robbery.

Let that sink in for a moment.

More than 90% of sexual abuse reports are real. Yet society treats victims with skepticism before believing them. This backwards approach destroys lives and protects predators.

And it gets worse:

Law enforcement officers are often the worst about believing the false reporting myth. They drastically overestimate the prevalence of false reporting. Up to 90% of law enforcement officers falsely believe most allegations are false. This culture of disbelief means real victims are interrogated instead of supported.

Why Victims Stay Silent

Listen to something most people don’t realize…

Less than half of all sexual assaults ever get reported to police.

Only 37% of sexual assaults get reported to police.

That’s right. Most victims never come forward at all.

Why?

Fear. Nothing more than fear.

They fear:

  • not being believed
  • being blamed for what happened
  • retaliation from their attacker
  • their lives being scrutinized
  • going through a traumatic investigation

And honestly? Their fears are 100% justified.

Society has created an environment where reporting sexual abuse is riskier than staying silent. Victims know they’ll get asked about what they were wearing, where they were, why they were there, why they didn’t fight back harder, etc.

The result?

Perpetrators are almost never held accountable. They know victims won’t report. And if they do? Society will focus on the victim first.

Destroying The Biggest Myths

Let’s bust some myths that need to die right now.

Myth #1: Real Victims Fight Back

WRONG.

Real victims often experience “tonic immobility” (basically a freeze response). They are literally unable to move or speak during the assault. This is a common trauma response, not consent.

Myth #2: Sexual Abuse Only Happens To Women

WRONG.

Nearly one-quarter of men experience contact sexual violence during their lifetime. Sexual abuse affects all genders. But male victims face even more barriers due to the cultural narrative of “real men” being unable to be victims.

Myth #3: Most Attackers Are Strangers

Backwards.

Eight out of ten victims know their attacker. They’re usually a:

  • friend
  • family member
  • current or former partner
  • coworker or classmate

“The stranger in the bushes” scenario is actually the exception, not the rule.

Myth #4: Certain Clothes Invite Assault

Maddening.

Clothing has absolutely nothing to do with sexual assault. People get sexually assaulted wearing sweatpants, work uniforms, pajamas, everything. “What were you wearing?” victim-blaming garbage that needs to stop.

The Real Statistics Paint A Different Picture

Ready for some stats to blow your mind?

Sexual violence is shockingly common:

  • Someone is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds in America
  • 1 in 5 women experience completed or attempted rape
  • 1 in 71 men report experiencing rape
  • 16% of youth ages 14-17 are sexually victimized each year

But here’s what really matters:

This isn’t just statistics. This is people. Your neighbors, coworkers, friends, family members. Sexual abuse touches every community.

Kids? They’re especially vulnerable. 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys experience sexual abuse.

How False Beliefs Create More Victims

Misconceptions about sexual abuse don’t just hurt current survivors. They also create new victims.

How?

By protecting predators and silencing survivors. If society believes victims are lying, predators know they can get away with it. They count on the myths and misconceptions to protect them.

Think about it…

If everyone believes that false reports are rampant, who benefits? Not victims. They face more scrutiny and doubt. The only people who benefit are perpetrators who get to use society’s disbelief to protect them.

Misconceptions and false beliefs also prevent prevention efforts. If people don’t understand how sexual abuse really happens, they can’t protect themselves or others. They’re watching for the wrong warning signs and trusting the wrong people.

What Needs To Change Now

Society has to completely overhaul the way it thinks about sexual abuse.

It starts with just believing survivors.

This doesn’t mean tossing out due process. It means approaching allegations of sexual abuse with empathy and understanding, not suspicion and doubt. It means recognizing that false reports are rare, not rampant.

Law enforcement needs to receive better training about:

  • Trauma responses
  • Real stats on false reporting
  • How to interview survivors with sensitivity

Communities need to step up too.

Stop asking victims why they didn’t report earlier. Stop questioning what they were wearing. Start creating environments where survivors feel safe coming forward.

Moving Forward With Facts, Not Fiction

Misconceptions about sexual abuse have gone on long enough.

Every single myth society perpetuates makes it that much harder for survivors to heal. Every false belief protects another predator. Every misconception keeps another victim from coming forward.

But information changes everything.

When people understand the reality of sexual abuse — who it affects, how it happens, why victims respond the way they do — they can be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Sexual abuse investigations deserve to be taken seriously. Survivors deserve to be believed and supported. Society desperately needs to let go of the dangerous myths and misconceptions that have protected predators for far too long.

The Bottom Line

Sexual abuse misconceptions aren’t just wrong. They’re dangerous.

They silence victims, protect perpetrators, and prevent justice. Statistics prove false reports are rare. Data shows most victims never report. Evidence is clear that society’s myths cause immeasurable harm.

It’s time to face reality:

Sexual abuse is common. False reports are not. Victims deserve belief, not interrogation. Every single misconception society believes makes the problem worse.

Simple choice. Continue to believe the myths that protect predators. Or believe the facts that protect victims. Which side will you choose?
