Driver Errors

Driver (or rider) error remains a leading cause of road accidents in the UK. It accounts for a significant percentage of incidents leading to injuries and even fatalities.

When we talk about driver error, we mean a mistake made by the person in charge of the vehicle. This could include anything from misjudging a bend, turning incorrectly at a junction, or not checking a blind spot before pulling away.

Being aware of other road users and understanding the Highway Code is a key way to guard against driver error.

In such situations, a smart dash cam can offer crucial footage, helping to objectively determine the sequence of events and identify the contributing factors of an accident.

Behaviour and Inexperience

Driver behaviour is another significant contributor to accidents on the road. This includes driving carelessly or aggressively and breaking the speed limit. According to recent statistics, 67% of all car occupant fatalities occurred in speed-related collisions.

Inexperience can also play a role. New drivers of all ages and young drivers are more at risk of accidents, along with those who don’t drive very often or who are unfamiliar with the road conditions or their vehicle.

To reduce the risk of having an accident on the road, you should show consideration for other road users and always stick to speed limits. When driving a new vehicle, take time to familiarise yourself with it before setting out on your journey.

Impairment and Distraction

Drivers who are impaired, for example through alcohol or drug use, or distracted, for example, through mobile phone use, are significantly more likely to cause a collision.

In 2021, an estimated 260 people were killed by drink-drivers alone, while using a mobile phone behind the wheel makes you four times more likely to be involved in a crash.

Road Environment and Other Contributing Factors

The environment can also play a role. For example, slippery road surfaces due to rain, snow, or ice increase stopping distances significantly, while reduced visibility can make accidents more likely.

Drivers should check the weather forecast ahead of time, and take into account the likely driving conditions when deciding whether or not to make a journey.

If driving in an unfamiliar area or in hazardous conditions, such as snow, fog, or heavy rain, drivers should exercise caution and adjust their speed accordingly.

Other contributing factors include things such as vehicle defects, highlighting the need for regular vehicle maintenance.

Unclear road markings or confusing road layouts, lack of signage, and even the road surface itself can also contribute to the likelihood of an accident occurring.
