Calming an Overstimulated Nervous System: Simple Practices for Busy Days

Posted on September 14, 2026 By Becky

Ever felt wired and exhausted at the exact same time?

That is an overwhelmed nervous system. Too many alerts. Too many choices. Too much stimulation. And a body that doesn’t ever fully realize there isn’t an emergency.

You’re not alone. In fact, it’s much more common than you might think. New data from APA reveals that two-thirds of adults experience at least one physical symptom of stress in a given month. Examples include anxiety, fatigue and headaches.

The good news?

Cooling out doesn’t mean taking a week vacation or going to silent retreat in the mountains. A few simple practices on your regular hectic days will carry most of the load.

Here’s how it works…

What you’ll pick up:

  1. Why Your Nervous System Gets Stuck On
  2. The Warning Signs Most People Miss
  3. 6x Practices That Calm You Down Fast
  4. When Simple Practices Aren’t Enough

Why Your Nervous System Gets Stuck On

Your nervous system has two modes. One accelerates you to respond to threats. The other decelerates you to rest, digest and heal.

The problem is that modern life keeps pressing the first button.

A deadline. A text at 10pm. A headline. Stress isn’t lions and bears. But your body doesn’t know that. It pumps you full of cortisol and adrenaline, tenses your muscles and raises your heart rate – again and again and again all day.

Do that for long enough and the off switch stops working properly.

And here’s where it gets serious…

When that switch is left stuck on for months, many folks reach for something to push it off. A drink to relax. A benzo to sleep. Then both at once. Mixing alcohol and benzodiazepines is one of the most common paths an overtaxed nervous system takes toward dependence, because both classes of drug dampen brain activity. When multiple substances are required to function, quitting cold turkey is legitimately dangerous, and inpatient detox for polysubstance use becomes the only safe path forward. That’s the bottom of the hill. But it almost always begins with a nervous system no one helped soothe.

The Warning Signs Most People Miss

Overstimulation rarely announces itself. It creeps.

Most individuals think they’re merely “stressed out” until it all accumulates. Symptoms to look for include:

  • Reading the same sentence four times
  • A jaw that aches by mid-afternoon
  • Snapping at people over nothing
  • Feeling tired but unable to sleep
  • Everyday sounds that suddenly seem too loud

Notice anything? None of these are stressful. They look like personality defects, or a rough day, or just plain getting old.

They’re not. They’re signals.

6x Practices That Calm You Down Fast

You don’t have to do every one of these. Choose two or three. Apply them during your busiest days and stick with them until you see the difference.

Breathe Out Longer Than You Breathe In

This is the fastest tool available and it costs nothing.

Inhale through your nose on the count of four. Exhale slowly through your nose on the count of six or eight. The exhale is what’s important – it activates the part of your nervous system that calms your heart rate.

Two minutes will take the edge off. Do it in your car, at your desk, or in the bathroom before a meeting.

Use Cold Water

Splash cold water on the face and wrists for thirty seconds.

Cooling your face initiates a reflex that reduces heart rate in seconds. It seems too easy to be effective, and that’s why most people never try it.

Move For Ten Minutes

Stress chemicals are designed to be burned off by movement.

Tell them to sit still and they’ll sit around. Take a ten minute power walk and your body has somewhere to channel that extra energy — plus walking outside gives you daylight, which subliminally helps you sleep that night.

No time? Take the stairs twice. Movement still counts when it’s inconvenient.

Cut The Input

Your nervous system is reacting to volume, not just difficulty.

One thing you can do: reserve an hour each day where you put the phone away, close the tabs and shut off the white noise. No podcasts, no scrolling, no second screen.

It will sting for the first few days. That is the point — discomfort is the sound of breaking complacency.

Anchor Yourself In Your Senses

When the mind races ahead, drag it back into the room.

Name five things you see. Four you hear. Three you feel. It’s silly but it works because your brain can’t do a full threat simulation while staying grounded in the now.

Guard The First And Last Hour

How the day starts and ends sets the tone for everything in between.

Grabbing your phone before your feet hit the ground means your day starts with someone else’s priorities. Reading email in bed means you’re feeding your brain new stimuli at the moment it should be powering down.

Protect those two hours and:

  • Mornings feel less frantic
  • Sleep quality improves
  • The whole day has more slack in it

When Simple Practices Aren’t Enough

Breathing exercises are brilliant. They are also not a treatment for everything.

Sometimes a nervous system has been overstimulated for too long or numbed out with substances for too long, and DIY care just isn’t going to cut it anymore. There’s no shame in that. What’s shameful is letting it get that far. But there is a huge cost to neglecting it, and CDC figures show that tens of millions of people need treatment for substance use annually, yet only a small portion of those people ever get it.

Signs it’s time to speak to a professional:

  • Sleep only comes with the help of something
  • The amount needed keeps creeping upwards
  • Stopping brings shakes, nausea or panic
  • More than one substance is now involved

That last one is especially important. Withdrawal from polysubstances can have unpredictable effects on your heart, blood pressure, and brain which you should monitor under medical supervision. Supervised programs exist for a reason.

Getting help early is always easier than getting help late.

Bringing It All Together

Having a nervous system that is overstimulated is not a flaw in your character. It is your normal body reacting to excessive stimuli.

To quickly recap:

  • Long exhales beat deep breaths
  • Cold water works in seconds
  • Ten minutes of movement burns off stress chemicals
  • Silence is a practice, not a luxury
  • Your senses pull you back to right now
  • The first and last hour of the day are worth protecting

Pick one. Take it tomorrow. During an actually busy day. Notice the difference.

Because it was never about releasing the pressure. It’s about making sure the body learns to turn off when the pressure is gone.
