3 Home Repair Jobs You Should Never Attempt Yourself

Posted on March 10, 2026October 14, 2026 By Becky

You can understand why people try to tackle as many DIY tasks as they can. After all, not only is completing home repair jobs yourself more satisfying, but it can also save some serious money. When it feels like there’s always something to be done, the thought of getting out your tools and doing the job yourself can be a lot more appealing than organising a professional to come and do the job on your behalf.

However, in many cases, those professionals don’t exist to exclusively serve the homeowners who have no interest in DIY. They’re there for all homeowners who don’t have the expertise and experience to perform the job safely and to a high standard. While there are some jobs you can do yourself, there are others that you should always leave to the pros.

Electrical Jobs

There are two reasons why people attempt to fix electrical issues themselves. The first is that electrical issues usually mean no electricity, which can be tough to live with for more than a few hours. The other is that there’s no shortage of YouTube tutorials that promise to show eager homeowners how to fix the issues themselves.

But you should never attempt electrical work yourself. Always call a professional electrician. Not only will they make sure the job is done right (electrical work is complex), but they’ll keep you and your home safe — faulty wiring is responsible for a big percentage of UK home fires, and in addition, electrical work can be extremely dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Roof Repair

As with electrical work, living with a damaged roof can be frustrating, especially if it has post-storm damage and is at increased risk of letting in water. Throw in the fact that roofing supplies can be bought cheaply, and you can see why some homeowners are tempted to get up there and fix the issue themselves.

But roofing work is dangerous, and it also needs to be done correctly to be effective. A professional roofer will have the experience and expertise to make sure that your roof is structurally sound and made to last, which will not only prevent water from leaking into your home but also protect your investment. A damaged, poorly-repaired roof can knock thousands off the value of your property. Working with a professional prevents that issue.

Wall Removal

Open plan designs are found everywhere these days, and if you’ve decided that you would also like to have a more spacious kitchen or living area, then it’s possible you’ll need a wall to come down to make it happen. Most people know not to touch their home’s main walls, but plasterboard walls can appear to be purely cosmetic and thus OK to bring down.

But looks can be deceiving, and taking a sledgehammer to anything in your property runs the risk of causing severe structural damage that you will instantly regret. Before doing anything, make sure you consult with a professional so you fully understand the implications.

Extra Tips Before Attempting DIY Home Repairs

Know Your Limits

DIY can be rewarding, but it’s important to recognise when a job is beyond your skill level. If a repair involves electrical systems, structural changes, plumbing, or roofing, it’s usually safer to call a professional.

Consider Insurance and Building Regulations

Many major home repairs must meet building regulations. If work is carried out incorrectly or without proper approval, it could affect your home insurance or cause issues when selling your property.

Think About Long-Term Costs

Attempting complex repairs yourself might seem cheaper at first, but mistakes can lead to costly damage. Hiring a professional from the start often saves money in the long run.

Prioritise Safety

Working at heights, handling electrical systems, or modifying structural elements can pose serious risks. Professionals have the training, equipment, and experience to carry out these jobs safely.

Get Multiple Quotes

If you do decide to hire a professional, it can be helpful to compare quotes from a few reputable contractors. This allows you to understand typical costs and ensure you’re choosing someone reliable.

FAQs About DIY Home Repairs

Why should some home repairs be left to professionals?

Certain repairs require specialised training, tools, and knowledge to complete safely and correctly. Attempting them without experience can result in injury, property damage, or costly mistakes.

Is it illegal to do electrical work yourself in the UK?

Some minor electrical tasks may be allowed, but most electrical work must meet strict regulations and often requires a qualified electrician to ensure it is safe and compliant.

Can removing the wrong wall damage my home?

Yes. Removing a load-bearing wall without proper structural support can cause serious damage to your property and may even make it unsafe.

What DIY repairs are usually safe to attempt?

Simple tasks such as painting, basic decorating, replacing door handles, installing shelves, or minor garden projects are generally safe for most homeowners to do themselves.

How do I know if a wall is load-bearing?

It’s not always obvious. A structural engineer or experienced builder can assess your home and determine whether a wall is supporting the structure.

When should I call a professional immediately?

You should call a professional if you notice electrical faults, major roof leaks, structural cracks, gas issues, or anything that could pose a safety risk.
