Questions To Ask Yourself When You Reach Your 50s

Posted on March 10, 2026 By Becky

As we get older, it’s important to take a look at our lives, where we currently are, and our future plans, and to ask if they’re still working for us. There’s no guarantee that your fiftieth birthday is going to bring about any major change, but it’s a good opportunity to think about the decades ahead, what they might bring, and any changes you might need to make in your own life or finances.

Are You Financially Ready For Retirement?

The first thing you should consider is whether or not retirement is becoming a feasible possibility. It might still be several years away from now, but you don’t really have the option to delay preparations if you do intend to stop working at any point. Focusing on your long-term financial security means taking the time to review your retirement savings, pensions, and investment accounts, and see the difference between what you have and what you need. You might need to start weighing things a little more heavily towards preparing for your exit from work.

What Do Your Debts And Assets Look Like?

It’s also a good time to take a full inventory of your accounts and to fully understand your financial position and net worth by reviewing both your debts and your assets. Make sure that you account for any mortgages, loans, open credit balances, as well as savings accounts, property, investments, and existing retirement funds. You want to make sure that you have a plan to start whittling down your debt, especially if you intend to move to a lifestyle where you’re not making an active income from your work. Prevent your debt from draining your retirement funds by working on it now.

Does Your Life Insurance Meet Your Needs?

If you haven’t purchased a life insurance policy yet, but you have family that you want to provide for, then now’s the time to do it. However, even if you have already purchased a policy, it might not meet your needs anymore. Compared to policies designed to provide for young children or cover a mortgage, an over 50 life insurance policy might be more in line with your existing financial needs. You can adjust coverage levels to make it more affordable or ensure that your policy offers enough to cover any end-of-life expenses.

Do You Have An Updated Will In Place?

As we get older, we do and should consider our mortality a little more. Especially if you have any assets, property, or money that you want to leave to a loved one. Without a written will in place, the law may decide where your assets go, and this won’t always be in keeping with your wishes. Writing a will allows you to decide how your assets are used, as well as to communicate any last messages to your loved ones. Don’t put it off any longer if you don’t have one.

It’s worth addressing the questions above every once in a while to make sure that you’re giving your future the consideration it deserves. Pushing things off further down the road can only make them tougher to handle when the time comes.

Additional Tips to Consider in Your 50s

Review Your Health and Lifestyle Habits

Your 50s are a great time to reassess your health routines. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and preventative health checks can have a major impact on your quality of life in the decades ahead.

Think About Your Housing Needs

Many people start to consider whether their current home will still suit them in the future. Some choose to downsize, relocate, or modify their home to better support long-term comfort and accessibility.

Consider Your Career Plans

Some people choose to continue working well beyond traditional retirement age, while others explore part-time roles, consultancy work, or even new career paths. Thinking about how you want to spend your working years ahead can help you plan financially and personally.

Revisit Your Investment Strategy

Investment priorities can change in your 50s. Some people shift toward more stable investments to protect the wealth they’ve built, while others maintain a balanced portfolio that still allows for growth.

Strengthen Your Support Network

Family, friends, and community connections become increasingly important over time. Investing in relationships and social activities can help maintain wellbeing and prevent isolation later in life.

FAQs About Life in Your 50s

Why is turning 50 a good time to review your finances?

Your 50s are often the final decade before retirement planning becomes critical. Reviewing finances now allows you to adjust savings, investments, and debt strategies while you still have time to make meaningful changes.

How much retirement savings should you have in your 50s?

The exact amount varies depending on lifestyle expectations and retirement age. Financial planners often suggest having several times your annual salary saved by this stage, but individual circumstances can differ greatly.

Should you pay off debt before retiring?

Many financial experts recommend reducing or eliminating high-interest debts before retirement so that living expenses are easier to manage on a fixed income.

Is life insurance still important in your 50s?

Yes, life insurance can still be valuable, especially if you have dependants, outstanding debts, or wish to cover funeral or estate costs.

When should you start writing a will?

Ideally, everyone with assets or dependants should have a will in place. However, if you haven’t written one yet, your 50s are a sensible time to ensure your wishes are clearly documented.

Can you still change careers in your 50s?

Absolutely. Many people choose to retrain, start businesses, or pursue passion projects later in life. With careful planning, a career change can be both financially and personally rewarding.
