How to Create Calm Evenings in a Lively Household

Posted on January 20, 2026 By Becky

Everyone should feel like their home offers peace. Of course, for many families, this can feel like a dream that cannot quite be reached, especially if there are little ones running around!

So, how do you create calm evenings in an otherwise lively household? How do you make it easier to get everyone to bed? Keep reading to learn the secrets.

Always Start with Good Sleeping Environments

It is hard for anyone to feel calm and ready for bed if the sleep environment isn’t good enough! To create a better sleep environment, start with the bed. The size, shape, and firmness of the bed make a huge difference. It’s best to invest in custom mattresses for the whole family so that everyone has the exact type of sleeping conditions that work for them. If you have a particularly tall member of the household, a longer mattress may be necessary! Of course, you’ll also need a high-quality bedroom that the mattress fits on, too.

Moving on from the bed itself, there are other ways to create a good sleeping environment. That includes:

  • Eliminating light
  • Keeping the room cool
  • Getting blackout curtains

Get the Energy Out in the Daytime

Often, kids play up around bedtime because they still have a lot of pent-up energy. While how they spend their time at school may be out of your hands, you can get your kid’s energy out by signing them up for energetic activities after school. Or, if you have the time, by doing a fun activity with them in the late afternoons before the time for a quieter, calmer evening comes around.

evening routine

Have a Dedicated Evening Activity

To make the transition from daytime to nighttime smoother, have a dedicated activity in the evening that perfectly bridges the gap. Naturally, you need this activity to be calming, so anything to do with running around isn’t the best idea (this activity is better earlier on, as demonstrated in the last point). Some more peaceful activities that will make people feel ready for bed include:

  • Reading
  • Watching a movie
  • Playing some (relaxing) music
  • Doing a puzzle
  • Taking a bubble bath

If you get into a routine that involves going to bed after the activity, the activity itself should stimulate calmer feelings.

Adjust the Lighting

Another way to create a calmer feeling in the evening is by simply adjusting the lighting! Get some bulbs that you can change the brightness and temperature of, and then, when the evening rolls around, simply adjust them so that they are dimmer and warmer. This creates a cosier feeling and will have everyone in the house struggling to keep their eyes open before too long!

Limit Late-Evening Screen Time

It’s true, screen time before bed is bad for you. This is because of the blue light emitted by the screens, which can suppress the sleep hormone melatonin and, in turn, interrupt getting a restful night of sleep. So, when evening comes, eliminate screen time for at least an hour.

Take These Steps Towards Calmer Evenings

A calm evening may feel like a distant dream, but just a few adjustments to your routine can make a big difference! Investing in a mattress from wowbeds.co.uk can eliminate late-night screen time, and having a transitional day-to-evening activity can make evenings far calmer. Then, you’ll find that everyone feels more refreshed the next morning.
