What are the Main Causes of Financial Anxiety?

Posted on December 15, 2025 By Becky

If you feel as though you have a lot of money anxiety, then you will know what a toll this can take on your life over time. You may also feel as though nothing you do helps you to work through the situation you are in, because you only have a limited amount of money to work with. Either way, if this sounds like you, then take a look below.

History of Financial Stability

Growing up in poverty or even seeing your parents have struggles with debt can easily contribute to you having your own level of financial instability. Having any kind of financial crisis can also cause lasting impressions. The main thing that you need to remember is that experiences like this will not affect you, as you are probably already taking steps to try and stop this. Of course, you can also work with a financial advisor, as they can help you to not only make sure that you are financially stable, but that you are also taking steps to make sure that you are not falling into some of the many traps that most people do.

Job Loss

Another big mistake that people tend to make is not thinking about the possibility of losing a job. Lacking a stable and predictable income is a big deal, and if you end up struggling with your job, then this can cause you a lot of anxiety. If you work in the freelance world or if you work in the gig economy, then you may also find that you are at a much higher risk of job loss, which is the last thing you need.

Lacking Insurance

Another big mistake that people make is not having life insurance. If you don’t know how life insurance works, then a simple Google search for how does life insurance work will tell you everything you need to know. With that said, if you bury your head in the sand and if you don’t take steps to try and help yourself when you can, then your life will become more difficult. Taking out insurance is easy to do, and it doesn’t take a long time either. You can do it online most of the time, and this will give you access to the information you need, without any stress at all. If you want to try and get some additional help, then it may be that you hire a financial advisor, or that you try and work with people who understand your situation and who can help.

If you have a long-term health condition, or if you know that you find it hard to get the result you want out of your current policy for any reason, then it does help to try and get this sorted soon, so you don’t end up missing out on insurance when you could be entitled to a payment. Things like this can make a major difference, so be sure to keep this in mind if you can, as it will ease your anxiety.

Tips for Managing Financial Anxiety

  • Create a simple, realistic budget.
Even a basic breakdown of income and expenses can make you feel more in control. Start small and adjust as you go.

  • Build a small emergency buffer.
You don’t need thousands right away—saving even £100–£200 can reduce stress and provide a sense of safety.

  • Track your financial triggers.
Notice what situations or thoughts increase your anxiety—unexpected bills, checking your bank balance, or job uncertainty. Awareness helps you prepare and plan.

  • Talk openly about money.
Whether with a partner, trusted friend, or financial advisor, sharing your worries can help you gain perspective and solutions.

  • Set one manageable goal.
Instead of trying to “fix everything,” focus on one area—reducing a small debt, improving your credit score, or increasing savings slightly.

  • Limit financial comparison.
Avoid comparing your situation to others online or in your social circle. Most people only show the highlight reel, not their financial struggles.

  • Use financial planning tools.
Apps, budget planners, and spending trackers can simplify money management and reduce overwhelm.

  • Seek professional guidance if needed.
A financial advisor or debt charity can help you understand your options and create a plan tailored to your situation.
