Fun outdoor activities to get your children outside this autumn and winter

Posted on November 19, 2025November 19, 2025 By Becky

As the air turns crisp and the days grow shorter, it can be tempting to spend more time indoors with the kids.

But even in the cooler months, outdoor play is one of the best things families can do together. Fresh air, movement, and time in nature help children reset, burn energy, and spark imagination—all while giving parents a chance to unwind too.

With a bit of preparation and creativity, autumn and winter can offer some of the most magical outdoor experiences of the year.

Seasonal nature adventures

Crunchy leaves, golden light, and frosty mornings make the colder seasons perfect for exploring the great outdoors. A simple walk in the park or woodland trail can turn into a nature treasure hunt.

Give your children a little checklist or collection bag and ask them to look for pinecones, colourful leaves, interesting sticks, or animal tracks. Older children might enjoy photographing their findings or sketching them later at home.

If your family enjoys creativity, bring nature into art. Collect leaves of different shapes and sizes for leaf rubbings or create a family tree collage using sticks and dried leaves. These activities not only keep children active but also strengthen their observation skills and connection to the natural world.

Outdoor games and physical play

Even when it’s chilly, physical play helps children stay warm and engaged. Wrap up with extra layers, hats, and gloves, and bring some fun equipment outside. A frisbee, football, or skipping rope can quickly turn a quiet park visit into a lively game session.

For younger children, simple games like ‘Follow the Leader’ or ‘Simon Says’ can be adapted for outdoor paths and playgrounds.

You can even design your own family obstacle course using natural features. Balance along logs, jump over puddles, crawl under branches, and run to the nearest tree and back. These mini challenges strengthen coordination, boost confidence, and often lead to plenty of laughter.

Ride-on cars and outdoor toys

Ride-on cars, trikes, and other wheeled toys are fantastic additions to outdoor play all year round, even when the weather is cooler. They do far more than keep children entertained—these toys play a key role in building gross motor skills, balance, and coordination. Steering, pushing, pedalling, and stopping all help children learn how their bodies move while improving muscle strength and control.

Beyond physical benefits, ride-on toys naturally inspire imaginative play. A child in a mini ride-on car might transform into a racing driver zooming around the neighbourhood, a delivery driver on a mission, or a superhero saving the day. That blend of movement and make-believe encourages problem-solving and creativity. For younger toddlers, simple push-along ride-ons give a sense of independence while still allowing supervision and gentle guidance.

During autumn and winter, ride-on play can still be enjoyable if surfaces are safe and dry. Pavements, patios, and smooth driveways work best—just make sure little riders are dressed warmly and wear sturdy footwear. A short ‘adventure drive’ around the garden or local park can be the highlight of a brisk morning walk.

Winter-themed family fun

Colder months bring unique outdoor opportunities that other seasons can’t match. When frost or snow arrives, the outdoors turns into a ready-made playground.

Build snowmen, make snow angels, or set up friendly snowball target games. On drier days, go for a family stroll to spot holiday decorations in your neighbourhood or enjoy a hot-chocolate picnic after a frosty morning walk.

If you live somewhere with mild winters, try gardening projects such as planting bulbs for spring or setting up wildlife feeders. Children can fill bird feeders, watch visiting birds, and learn about the habits of different species. Even just stepping out to check on these small projects gives children a sense of routine and responsibility, helping them feel connected to nature throughout the year.

Making it work for your family

Getting outside doesn’t have to mean a big trip or perfect weather. 10 or 15 minutes a day of outdoor time can make a meaningful difference in a child’s mood and energy levels.

The key is flexibility—let your plans match the day. If it’s misty, go for a ‘fog walk’ with flashlights. If it’s snowy, head outside for some sculpting or gentle sledging. If it’s sunny but cold, bring a thermos of warm drinks and a blanket for storytime in the park.

Parents often worry about staying outdoors too long or struggling with layers and logistics, but children are remarkably resilient once they start playing. Comfort, safety, and curiosity are what matter most. Having a spare pair of gloves or an extra pair of wellies on hand can make spontaneous play much easier.

The joy of year-round outdoor play

By embracing outdoor adventures through autumn and winter, families cultivate habits that benefit children all year long. Fresh air, imaginative freedom, and physical activity strengthen both body and mind.

Whether your child is steering their favourite ride-on toy, jumping through puddles, or collecting the perfect pinecone for their craft box, they are doing far more than playing—they are learning, growing, and making memories that last far beyond the season.

The magic of outdoor play doesn’t fade when the temperatures drop. It simply changes shape, taking on new colours, sounds, and sensations. All it takes is a sense of fun, a few warm layers, and a willingness to step outside.
