Exterior Car Detailing: A List of Products to Keep Your Car Looking Pristine

Posted on November 18, 2025 By Becky

There’s nothing quite like the look of a brand new car – that gleaming, showroom shine that turns heads wherever you go. But as the miles pile up, that sparkle starts to fade. It’s the relentless beating from sunlight, rain, dirt and road debris that gradually wears away the glossy surface, leaving your car looking tired and dull.

A regular wash will do a bit to perk things up, but if you really want to bring back that showroom sparkle, you need to use specialised exterior car cleaner products.

Why That?

Specialised exterior car care products aren’t just about getting rid of dirt – they’re also about protecting your car’s paintwork, making it shine, and stopping the long-term damage that environmental elements can cause.

Take car shampoos, for example. Good ones will lift away dirt and grime without stripping away the protective wax coating – and that makes all the difference. Then there are waxes and sealants which create a barrier against the sun’s UV rays, rain and road salt. These extra layers not only make your car look like it just came off the production line but also shield the paint from fading, oxidation and corrosion. And with regular use, they’ll help keep that deep, reflective finish looking like new for much longer.

What Do You Really Need?

Sorting through all those exterior car cleaner products promising a showroom finish can be a real pain. The truth is, to get the best out of your car’s exterior, you only need a few of the essentials. So here’s what you need in your detailing kit.

Gentle Car Wash Soap

A good car wash soap is the foundation of any exterior detail job. And it’s really important to use a gentle one – they are designed to lift dirt and grime off safely, without stripping away any of that protective wax coating or damaging the paint. You might be tempted to use a household detergent to wash your car, but the problem is that they’re usually too harsh and will leave your car looking dull.

A dedicated car shampoo, on the other hand, is designed to be gentle on the paint and is formulated with lubricating agents that help get the dirt off without causing any damage. Look for a car wash soap that produces a lot of suds, won’t strip away any wax you’ve already got on, and leaves a nice, smooth finish. Some of the better formulas will even leave a bit of extra shine in their wake.

Clay Bar and Clay Lubricant

A clay bar is a nifty detailing tool that’s soft and pliable – perfect for scrubbing away all the tiny contaminants that just won’t budge, no matter how hard you wash your car. You can wash your car with the best car soap in the world, but it’s still possible for tiny particles like tree sap, brake dust, tar, and even industrial fallout to get stuck in the paint. And all these particles can give your paint a rough texture, stopping your wax or sealant from doing its job properly.

Using a clay bar with a bit of lubricant to smooth out the job is just the ticket to lifting those pesky embedded particles and leaving your paint feeling silky smooth and ready for a good polish or waxing. A medium-grade clay bar is a good all-rounder – it’ll get rid of most of the contaminants with a bit of elbow grease, but it’s gentle enough to use regularly.

Protective Coating

Protective coatings are these super-smart products that form a shield between your paint and the harsh world outside. They add an extra layer of protection to keep your car’s paint looking showroom-new for longer – meaning you won’t need to get into detailed mode as often.

Unlike traditional waxes, which give a good shine but only offer short-term protection, protective coatings are so much more effective. They are usually a type of ceramic coating that bonds to the paint to create a hard, water-repellent layer that keeps dirt and contaminants at bay, even if your car gets scratched or faded. One application can last for months.

One of the best things about some formulas is that they are super easy to use – just spray on and you’re good to go. Perfect for people who want to get professional results without the hassle of liquid coatings.

Glass Cleaner

A good glass cleaner for cars is specifically made to cut through the tough grime you get on your car’s windows – from bug splats to road film and even water spots. And unlike the household cleaners you usually use on your windows, car glass cleaners don’t contain any ammonia, which means no damage to your tints and no sticky residue to deal with.

These cleaners dry quickly and give a brilliant finish, so you can drive safely in all sorts of weather. Whether it’s a bug splat on the windscreen or an oily film from a plastic interior, a good car glass cleaner makes the job a doddle.

Wheel Cleaner

Brake dust clings to your wheels like glue, and regular soap and water just can’t shift it. That’s why wheel cleaners are a must-have – they’re specifically designed to break down and dissolve that tough residue safely.

Acid-based cleaners can be very effective at cutting through heavy buildup, but can also be too harsh and damage delicate wheel finishes like chrome, painted or polished surfaces.

For most cars, a pH-balanced, non-acidic wheel cleaner is the safer choice. These products are gentle on all types of wheels yet powerful enough to remove brake dust, road grime and tar. In addition to restoring your wheel’s shine, a good wheel cleaner will also help prevent long-term corrosion and staining.

Tire Protector

A good tyre protectant does more than just make your tyres look deep black and glossy – it also helps preserve them. Over time, exposure to sunlight, heat, road grime and harsh weather can cause rubber to dry out, crack and fade. A dedicated tyre protection product forms a barrier against UV rays and ozone damage, helping to prevent premature ageing and deterioration.

Look for a tyre protectant that is water-based and non-greasy to get a natural finish that won’t attract dust or sling onto your paintwork.

What Else You’ll Need?

In addition to the right products, using the right tools and accessories also makes all the difference.

Microfibre towels are a must-have for drying and buffing. They’re soft, highly absorbent and gentle on your car’s surface, reducing the risk of scratches or streaks. A good wash mitt is another essential. It’s designed to lift dirt safely away from the paint without damaging it across the surface. For those hard-to-reach areas like grilles, emblems and wheel spokes, detailing brushes come in handy, allowing for precise cleaning without damaging delicate finishes.

And for serious detailers looking to take their car care routine to the next level, investing in a pressure washer and polishing equipment can make a huge difference. These tools will not only save you time but will also deliver a deeper clean and a professional-grade finish that’s hard to match by hand.
