The 2025 Fresher’s Week Survival Guide Posted on September 23, 2025 By Becky There’s nothing quite like the buzz and chaos of Fresher’s Week. Soon, campuses across the UK and London, Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge student apartments will come alive with new faces, late nights, and the first taste of sweet independence. It’s exciting, it’s messy, and if you’re not careful, it can feel overwhelming. I still remember moving to Leeds as a wide-eyed fresher more than 20 years ago – lugging my boxes into halls, meeting people who would become lifelong friends, and saying yes to just about everything in the first week. It was brilliant, but exhausting, and by the time lectures rolled around, I felt like I’d already done a term’s worth of living. Looking back, there are definitely a few things I wish I’d known. So, if you want to make the most of Fresher’s Week without losing your voice (or your student loan) before classes even start, here’s your survival guide – with a dash of lived experience. Tick off the boring stuff early It might not be glamorous, but getting the admin sorted quickly will save you stress later. Register with a local GP right away – being ill and far from home is daunting enough without panicking about healthcare. The NHS recommends students get their MenACWY and MMR vaccines before term begins, so check you’re up to date. Money is another big one. Banks often tempt students in September with offers – I remember friends proudly waving around free railcards and overdraft deals they’d bagged in Leeds city centre. Just make sure you pick an account that actually suits your lifestyle, then set a weekly budget. A quick hack? Switch on spending alerts so you don’t end up blowing your rent money on freshers’ cocktails (yes, it happens – I speak from experience). And while it’s hardly thrilling, check whether you need a TV licence. Back in my day, it was more about squeezing everyone into one tiny room to watch Friends, but if you’re planning on watching live TV or BBC iPlayer in your own room, the answer is yes. Otherwise, you might save yourself the fee. Say yes… but not to everything The Freshers’ Fair is a world of opportunity – from football clubs to cheese appreciation societies. Wander, chat, and sign up for a couple of things you genuinely care about, plus maybe one curveball just for the experience. Some of my happiest university memories came from societies I nearly walked past. That said, don’t skip the boring induction talks. They may not compete with a night out in the student union, but they’re where you’ll learn how to access your course portal, where to find quiet study spaces, and which deadlines will creep up faster than you think. I can still picture myself frantically asking around about essay deadlines halfway through the term – don’t be me. Keep your health (and your sanity) intact Almost everyone gets “Fresher’s flu” – a mix of colds and bugs that spread like wildfire when thousands of students suddenly share lecture halls. Stock up on tissues, keep hydrated, and don’t underestimate the power of an early night. If you’re drinking, pace yourself. I learned the hard way in my first week in Leeds that cheap shots and 3 a.m. kebabs are not a sustainable life plan. Look out for your friends, and remember – it’s not a race. And while it can feel awkward, know where your local sexual health clinic is. They’re free, confidential, and it’s far better to know where to go before you actually need it. Look after your money and your safety Freshers are prime targets for scams – the Student Loans Company still warns about phishing emails and dodgy texts. Never hand over details via a link, always log in via the official site. On a more practical level, take a few minutes to check the fire exits in your halls. Back in Leeds, it wasn’t unusual for someone to set off the alarms at 3 a.m. because they’d burned toast – knowing the quickest way out stops a prank or accident from turning into something serious. Balance buzz with balance Freshers’ Week is about having fun, but it also sets the tone for the rest of your year. Once the novelty of late nights has worn off, carve out a little time to organise your timetable, note down key deadlines, and maybe even cook a batch of meals. (Trust me, future-you will be grateful when you don’t have to survive on Pot Noodles alone during essay season.) And don’t be afraid to say no. Some of my best memories from Leeds aren’t from nights out, but from low-key evenings with flatmates – takeaway boxes, bad TV, and endless laughter. Enjoy the start of something new Fresher’s Week isn’t about doing everything. It’s about finding your rhythm, figuring out who you click with, and setting yourself up for the months ahead. Take care of your health, look after your money, and give yourself space to soak it all in. By the time lectures begin, you’ll feel less frazzled, more prepared – and ready to make the most of what will be one of the most memorable times of your life.
