Pyjamas to Lingerie: 9 Different Types Of Nightwear Posted on September 10, 2025 By Becky Nightwear is any type of clothing worn to bed (or worn just before going to bed). While it’s possible to sleep in all kinds of clothing (some people sleep in their underwear, some people wear t-shirts and some people wear nothing at all!), there are certain garments that are specifically designed for bedtime. This post explores some of the different categories of nightwear and when to wear them. Pyjamas The most popular form of nightwear (especially among kids) is pyjamas. These two piece sets make for the perfect cozy nighttime outfit. Choose a long-sleeved top and trousers made from flannel in the winter for warmth, and a short-sleeved top and shorts made of cotton in the summer for breathability. Onesies Rising to popularity in the early 2010s, onesies are essentially bedtime jumpsuits. They come in all kinds of wacky styles from animal-shaped onesies to scary skeleton onesies. While great for lounging in, onesies can get quite hot and stuffy if you try to sleep in them. Nightgowns Night gowns are pretty much dresses for sleeping in and are some of the most popular forms of nightwear for women and young girls. You can buy night gowns in various lengths and materials – longer night gowns made from flannel and wool are excellent for winter, while shorter night gowns made from cotton and silk are better suited for summer. Robes Tied up with a belt, robes are designed to be easily slipped on and off. Robes come in two main forms: nightrobes and bathrobes. Nightrobes can be made from various materials like flannel, silk or cotton. Bathrobes are made from a towel-like material and typically worn after getting out of the bath or shower. Loungewear Loungewear consists of sweatshirts and joggers designed for (as the name suggests) lounging around in. They’re a great choice of clothing for chilled nights-in, lazy mornings or even a whole day spent at home. It’s less common to sleep in loungewear, but there’s nothing stopping you from wearing them to bed if you want. Nightshirts Traditionally worn with a nightcap, button-up nightshirts are a less common sight nowadays. However, for those feeling in a vintage mood, a nightshirt can be a loose-fitting option that can offer the same amount of comfort and ventilation as a night gown. Chemises Chemises are sleeveless night gowns often made from silk or satin. They’re soft on the skin and a great option for a hot night. You’ll find chemises in various different styles from modest to more sensual looks. Babydolls Shorter in length and often slightly more seductive in appearance than a chemise, babydolls are another women’s nightwear option to consider. These garments come with bra cups – make sure to choose the right cup size for a comfortable fit. They’re a great option for romantic nights. Lingerie Talking of romance, lingerie is another form of nightwear you may want to consider for your wardrobe. Designed solely to be sexy, lingerie might not be the most comfortable nightwear for sleeping in. However, some lingerie options are more cozy than others – take your time to explore the many different styles of lingerie and find something you feel comfortable in. See more fashion posts here!
