How to Prepare Your Home for a Dog

Posted on July 17, 2025December 9, 2025 By Becky

There is no doubt that after watching hundreds of cute videos on YouTube, getting a dog of your own can seem like the best idea in the world. They are loyal, adorable and will do all kinds of funny things so you may have your own viral sensation on your hands! But before you go rushing off to your local pet store, you need to consider all the practical implications involved in owning a dog. As well as being a pleasure, it is also going to be a huge commitment that you need to make sure that you are prepared for. So, here are a few of the best ways that you can get your home ready for your new arrival.

Prepare For Your New Responsibilities

Your dogs will need regular care and attention, so you need to make sure that you have fully thought through all the practical implications of your decision. If you have a full-time job, you need to make other arrangements so that someone is there to feed and take your dog out for walks. If you are bringing a dog into your family home, it is important that everyone is fully aware of their responsibilities before he or she actually arrives. Doing internet research is a fantastic tool for discovering all you need to know about your dog. From studying different breeds and their traits to discovering useful training tips or nutrition advice, there is plenty of help online dedicated to pet care. Veterinary clinics, pet blogs, organizations like American Kennel Club (AKC), and https://wellnesswag.com/ provide expert guides. Online forums or social media groups where experienced dog owners share insights or answer queries provide more in-depth details and insight. Just make sure that it comes from credible sources so you can make well-informed decisions for their health.

Buy all of the Things You Need

You should make sure that you have all of the things you need before your dog arrives. Make a tick-list of everything he or she will need such as a leash, food, bowls, collar, toys, and a bed. It’s worth checking out places like Dogs Irish Marketplace where you can find quality essentials and compare options in one place. Make sure you are aware of what kind of food best suits your dog so you don’t have to deal with tummy upsets from the moment they arrive!

Locate Your Nearest Vet

It is important that you know the location of your nearest vet (or one that has been recommended to you) so you can bring your dog in for annual check-ups. Otherwise, you could always look into Veteris.co.uk for a mobile option. If you are adopting a puppy, they will be able to tell you about what vaccines they require and also offer advice about matters such as neutering. It is also a good idea to have the number of a 24-hour vet in case there is an emergency in the middle of the night.

Dog-Proof Your House

Every dog will react differently to their new environment, so you can never be 100 percent sure of some of the risks. To start off with, if you have any expensive items such as shoes lying around, it may be a wise idea to keep these out of reach! If you have anything that is spillable, try moving this to a higher shelf. Consider taping your electrical cords to baseboards to prevent any hazards from occurring here. It is a good idea to bring your dog back when you have a couple of days off in a row, so you can get them used to their new home when it is fully dog-proofed.
