Why Carpet Moths Are Invading Your Home (And How to Stop Them)

Posted on February 3, 2025 By Becky

Carpet moths might not be the first thing on your mind, but if you start noticing bald patches in your carpets or tiny moths fluttering around, you’ve got a problem. These little pests are sneaky, destructive, and surprisingly common in homes. If you’re wondering why they’ve chosen your home and what kind of damage they can cause, you’re in the right place.

Let’s break down why carpet moths infest homes, the havoc they can wreak, and, most importantly, what you can do to stop them.

What Attracts Carpet Moths to Your Home?

Carpet moths don’t just appear out of nowhere—they’re drawn in by specific conditions. If your home is dealing with an infestation, it’s likely due to one (or more) of these reasons:

1. Natural Fibers Are Their Favorite Meal

Carpet moths have expensive taste. They don’t care about synthetic carpets but will feast on wool, silk, and other natural fibers. If your carpets, rugs, or upholstery contain these materials, they’re an open invitation for moth larvae. So, the sooner you get in touch with a carpet moth exterminator, the more chance you have of saving your precious items!

2. Dark, Undisturbed Areas Are Their Breeding Grounds

Ever moved a heavy piece of furniture and found unexpected damage underneath? That’s a classic sign of carpet moths. They thrive in areas that aren’t frequently disturbed, like under sofas, along skirting boards, and inside closets.

3. Warmth and Humidity Speed Up Infestation

Carpet moths love warm, humid conditions. If your home provides a cozy environment, especially in the summer months, their lifecycle speeds up, and you’ll see more damage in a shorter time.

4. Old or Second-Hand Furniture Can Bring Them In

Bringing in vintage rugs or second-hand furniture? That’s a potential Trojan horse for carpet moths. Eggs or larvae might already be hiding within the fibers, and before you know it, they spread throughout your home.

5. Clothing and Fabrics Offer Extra Nesting Spots

Carpet moths don’t just stick to carpets. They’ll move onto clothing, curtains, and upholstery. If you’ve stored wool sweaters or delicate fabrics in a dark, undisturbed place, they’re at risk, too.

The Damage Carpet Moths Cause

These tiny pests might seem harmless at first, but their damage adds up quickly.

Your Carpet Can End Up Ruined

The most obvious (and frustrating) effect is patchy, thinning carpet. Larvae eat away at the fibers, leaving behind bare spots that are impossible to fix without replacing the entire section.

Upholstered Furniture Isn’t Safe Either

If you have wool-blend sofas or natural fiber cushions, carpet moths won’t hesitate to attack those as well. They’ll hide in seams and crevices, causing damage that often goes unnoticed until it’s severe.

Clothing Can Be Destroyed

Think only clothes moths go after your wardrobe? Carpet moths will feast on wool and silk garments, too. If you store clothes near an infested carpet, they’re at risk of becoming moth food.

Infestations Spread Fast

A few moths might not seem like a big deal, but their lifecycle means they multiply quickly. One unnoticed infestation can spread throughout your home before you even realize it.

How to Get Rid of Carpet Moths (and Keep Them Out For Good)

The good news? You can fight back. Here’s how to get rid of them and prevent them from returning:

  • Deep clean regularly – Vacuuming isn’t just for dust. It removes larvae and eggs, stopping them from turning into full-blown infestations. Focus on hidden spots under furniture and along edges of carpets.
  • Use moth-killing sprays or powders – Targeted treatments help eliminate eggs and larvae before they cause serious damage. Make sure to use products specifically designed for carpet moths.
  • Freeze infested items – If you find larvae on rugs or clothing, freezing them for 48 hours can kill them without chemicals.
  • Introduce natural deterrents – Moths hate strong scents like lavender, cedar, and rosemary. Placing these around your home can help keep them away.
  • Check second-hand furniture before bringing it inside – A quick inspection (and thorough cleaning) prevents you from accidentally inviting moths into your home.
  • Reduce humidity levels – Using a dehumidifier or ensuring good airflow makes your home less attractive to moths.

Keep Carpet Moths from Taking Over

Carpet moth infestations start small but can quickly lead to expensive damage if left unchecked. By understanding what attracts them, spotting the signs early, and taking preventative measures, you can keep your carpets, furniture, and clothing safe. A few simple steps now can save you the headache (and cost) of dealing with a full-scale infestation later.
