How to declutter as part of the home moving process Posted on May 30, 2024 By Becky Moving house can be a wonderful experience to go through. Despite the inevitable stress, you also get to reinvent your life, taking control of what items and habits you choose to take into your new home environment. To really make the most of this opportunity, it’s important that you can declutter for home moving and take it seriously. Today, we decided to take a look at how to optimise the decluttering process, from starting early to getting help from professional services. Start as early as possible It’s easy to think that decluttering is a simple process. After all, it’s as simple as packing some stuff into bags and taking them to the tip, right? The reality is that it often takes a lot more time and, importantly, a lot more emotional energy than you’d expect. To set yourself up for success, it’s crucial that you leave enough time to tackle the declutter in a reasonably relaxed and structured manner. To ensure you have enough time, you might want to start weeks, or even months, in advance of the actual move. Set yourself deadlines Decluttering is one of those tasks that’s incredibly easy to keep on putting off, even if you’re moving house. An effective strategy to ensure you get around to it is to set yourself deadlines that you need to meet throughout the process. Those could be targets to get different rooms finished by certain dates, or booking a removals service from somewhere like Bright Movers so you have a date that you need to be all packed up by. Whatever strategy you take, having these clear markers to work around can make the process a lot more manageable – especially for those of us who are prone to procrastination. Sort by item Trying to declutter your whole house in one go will obviously be an overwhelming and stressful experience. Instead, we recommend breaking the process down into more manageable chunks, such as sorting by item. By taking this approach, you can focus on one thing – books for example – for a week or two, before moving on to clothes or furniture. It requires less mental energy, and will likely allow you to compartmentalise the process in a more efficient and productive manner. Get help If you’re really serious about decluttering, and it’s something that you know you struggle with, then consider getting help from an expert. There are services that can provide you with just the kind of support you need, whether that’s physically removing things from your property or providing you with emotional support to help get you through it. These kinds of services really can be instrumental, making a whole world of difference to the decluttering process. Getting rid of the things you no longer need when you declutter for home moving can be a difficult process, but it’s absolutely worth it. Having fewer unnecessary possessions in your life not only makes your living space more enjoyable to spend time in, but it can also make you feel emotionally lighter. By using the house-moving process as an opportunity to declutter, you can take actionable steps to a better future with fewer things holding you down.
