Which Greek Island Should You Visit This Summer? Posted on March 10, 2024October 29, 2025 By Becky Greece has the option of more than 6,000 islands and islets, all of which are brimming with exciting experiences, delicious cuisine and unique character. There is something for every type of traveller, whether you’re looking to sunbathe on some of the world’s best beaches or delve into some ancient history. From the lush greenery of the Ionian Islands to the vibrant nightlight and fine sand of Zakynthos, you might be wondering which destination is right for your next summer holiday. You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to the Greek Islands and this guide is designed to make the decision easier for you. Crete The biggest of the Greek Isles and the warmest year-round, Crete offers its very own customs, accent and cuisine. The island is the stuff of legends, home to ancient ruins of the Palace of Knossos, the dwelling of the mythological Minotaur, and the Boutaris winery is the ideal spot for wine connoisseurs. It’s not all sun, sea and sand. Hike through the picturesque Samaria Gorge, a spectacular national park boasting a dramatic 16km hiking route. Kefalonia Amongst the most gorgeous of the Greek Islands is Kefalonia, an idyllic paradise for nature lovers and tourists searching for an authentic Greek experience. Explore the sleepy fishing towns of Fiskardo, stroll through the swathes of olive plantations and take in the breathtaking views from atop Mount Ainos. This island will be more peaceful, as it is quieter compared to others, making it a perfect romantic getaway for couples. Kick the romance up a notch and rent a villa for a secluded and intimate experience. Corfu Providing a seamless combination of the old town and great nightlife, Corfu is one of the main Ionian Islands. Very touristy and friendly, the countryside is luxurious and verdant, full of fruit groves and olive trees that are primed for exploration. One of the island’s main attractions is the UNESCO-listed Old Town, a confluence of Italian architecture, bustling squares, medieval walls and magnificent spires. If you want to mix up your sunbathing with a bit of physical activity, meander along the Corfu Trail which gives you the best views of the island. Zakynthos Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is one of the most versatile Greek Isle destinations. If you’re looking for some of the best nightlife in Europe, you’re in the right place. Equally, this location is perfect if you’re looking for breathtaking landscapes and quiet relaxation. While Zante is a favourite with young people, families can still enjoy the quiet mountains to the north and rocky coves of the Vassilikos Peninsula. Rhodes Bursting with year-round sunshine and interesting history, Rhodes is made up of alpine forests, sandy beaches and ancient landmarks. Spend your time sampling scrumptious grilled seafood, all washed down with ouzo chasers. Sustainable Travel in the Greek Islands When visiting the Greek islands, take the time to consider the environment, just as you would at home. That can include booking more eco-friendly places to stay in Greece, such as ones that serve locally sourced food. You might also pack a reusable water bottle for the trip instead of using multiple single-use plastic bottles that later end up at the bottom of the sea. That helps you do your part for ocean sustainability while on holiday. So, which Greek Island will you visit this summer?
