Why You Should Think About Decluttering

Posted on September 25, 2020July 23, 2024 By Becky

Decluttering is a big thing now, with experts in tidying up writing books and whole Netflix series being made around decluttering, tidying up and organising. Open any magazine and you will find articles about it. But, if you have never had a big session of decluttering, you might be wondering what the point of it is and why using services such as Temporary Dumpster, for instance, can help you clear away the things that do not provide you with anything other than a headache. Here are some reasons why you should be decluttering now.

Gives you more space

Whether you want more space to work, play, exercise or just spend time with your family, by getting rid of stuff that you do not need or want can create it. Do you really need that nest of tables that do not do anything other than to gather dust? As the great tidy-up expert Marie Kondo says, if it does not serve a purpose or bring you joy, get rid. If you need a little more time to think about it, consider hiring a self-storage unit from somewhere like Mammoth Storage.

Decluttering also gives you more mental space. Researchers at UCLA’s Centre on Everyday Lives and Families (CELF) have identified a direct link between the stress hormone cortisol and clutter. By getting rid of stuff you don’t need, you have more opportunity to focus on the important things in your life.

Enables you to see what is important to you

Physical clutter and mental clutter quite often cross over one another. When you have to be a little more choosy about the physical objects that you keep around you, you are more selective about them in the first place. Instead of buying that nice vase that will get shoved in a corner somewhere, you will ask yourself ‘do I really need it?’ and probably realise that you don’t. When it comes to your life, you will be able to ask yourself ‘do I really need that friend who makes me feel unhappy every time I see them?’. By decluttering your physical life, you will find it easier to declutter your emotional life.

Helps you to understand what you really love

If you keep hold of absolutely everything that comes into your possession, you can lose a sense of what you actually like. However, as you declutter, you begin to realise what you like and don’t like. Let’s take your wardrobe, for example. If it is overflowing with every item of clothing that you have ever bought or been given – maybe that leather mini skirt you wore on a university night out twenty years ago, and that strappy vest top you last wore at college – it can be hard to find what you actually like now. By paring it down, you begin to notice what you are keeping and what you are dumping. Have you gravitated towards keeping those bright colours or those neutral block colours? Once you understand what you like, you can be more decisive about what you buy or accept in the future.

These are just some of the benefits to decluttering; there are plenty more. Try it today and see how it not only improves the physical space that you live in but the mental one too.
