7 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Your Bones

Posted on January 16, 2025 By Becky

At some point, we all realize we’re not as spry as we used to be. We start admitting that we need a little help getting back on track with our health. And here’s something most of us don’t think about: our bones are in danger, but we usually don’t realize it until it’s too late. So, here are 7 bone facts you probably didn’t know—and how to get help if you think your bones might need some TLC.

1. Your Femur is the Big Boss

First up: your femur (the thigh bone) is the biggest and strongest bone in your body. If you start feeling pain or discomfort in that area, it might be a good idea to check in with your doctor and see if your bone strength is where it should be.

2. The Natural Calcium Boost

Now, did you know there are supplements with AlgaeCal? It’s as close as you can get to natural calcium, since bones actually contain traces of it. If you’re worried about your bones or have been told you’ve got brittle bones, adding a supplement to your routine could help boost bone strength. Just make sure to check out the potential side effects of AlgaeCal, and chat with your doctor before starting any new supplement – even if it’s natural.

3. Arms Are the Most Breakable as an Adult

Here’s a fun fact: your arms are the bones most likely to break as an adult. When you’re a kid, it’s usually your leg or collar bone. So, a little extra care to avoid slips and falls can save you from bone breakage.

4. Bone Healing Slows Down with Age

As we get older, it takes longer for our bones to heal. Remember how quickly you bounced back as a kid? Well, your bones stopped growing after puberty, so they take more time to regenerate and heal, meaning if you break a bone, you might be on crutches for longer. As we age, our bone density also drops, which means we’re more likely to develop osteoporosis down the line.

5. Milk Might Not Be Your Bone’s Best Friend

Milk – yeah, that childhood staple – isn’t as great for your bones as you might have been told. Some studies suggest that milk can actually increase your risk of breaking a bone because it can leach calcium from your bones, especially if you’re drinking pasteurized milk. Cow’s milk is meant for calves, not humans, so it doesn’t really do us any favors when it comes to bone health.

6. Dairy-Free = Stronger Bones?

Speaking of milk, those living dairy-free – whether by choice or due to an intolerance – tend to have stronger bones. Since they’re not drinking milk, their calcium intake comes from other sources, which helps keep bones nice and strong.

7. Your Bones Are Living, Breathing Things

And here’s something cool: your bones are living things! That’s why they can heal themselves when you break them. Every 5-7 years, your bones completely regenerate, so you’re essentially rocking a brand-new skeleton every few years. But, like everything else, the process slows down as you get older.

So, there you go! 7 things you probably didn’t know about your bones. Be careful with falls and accidents, and always talk to your doctor if you’re concerned about your bone health. Stay strong!
