December is one of my favourite times of year, and in our house the run up to Christmas has always been filled with festive prep for the big day, including fun activities for the children, delicious food, styling our home, making decorations… and Elf on the Shelf! As a Mum of 3, with my children now being 14, 13 and 8, we’ve had about 11 years now of our Elf on the Shelf, and whilst elfie is looking a bit haggard in his older age, he’s still going strong when it comes to being part of the magic of the build up to Christmas Day. 

Whilst Elf on the Shelf is so much fun and magical for the kids, as a busy working parent, it can be a teeny bit stressful. Oh yes. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve gone to turn my bedside light out, suddenly remembering that the bloody Elf was still sitting in the same spot as yesterday. There have been times of ‘elf regret’! 

Elf duty can be hard work, so that’s why I’ve pulled together this list of 60 quick Elf on the Shelf ideas. Each one takes just a few minutes to set up, uses things you’ve already got at home, and is guaranteed to bring big giggles in the morning. Your elf on the shelf arriving on the first day is on the best bits for kids – ours used to love the build up to the elf arriving from the North Pole at our home! You can still make a fun first impression without overthinking it, or spending loads on special ‘welcome’ balloons or other pricey ‘elf novelties’. 

1. Special Delivery

Wrap your Elf in festive paper that you already have and stick a homemade “North Pole Express” label on top. When your kids unwrap him, it feels like he’s just been delivered from Santa himself.

2. Chocolate Coin Surprise

Have the Elf arrive with a note from Santa and a pile of chocolate coins for the kids (always a big hit!). It’s a sweet, simple welcome gift that doubles as a treat.

 

3. Elf in the Cereal Box

Cut a flap into the front of a cereal box, and tuck your Elf inside so he’s peeking out. Breakfast just got a lot more magical, and it’s great if you’re introducing him in the morning to your kids before school!

One of all my kids absolute favourites, probably as it involved one of their favourite sweet treats! Grab a box of cheap supermarket doughnuts, pop the Elf next to them with a little sign, and you’ve got an instantly funny (and edible) welcome back.

6. Fridge Chill-Out

Place the Elf inside the fridge hugging the yoghurts. Your kids will squeal when they open the door to find him shivering with the milk. If you want to be a bit more elaborate and have a frozen elf on the shelf, you could freeze your elf in a tub of water the night before, take out first thing before your kids wake up, and then pop him in the fridge so when they open it they’re totally surprised! Obviously you can’t leave him too long before your children discover him, but if you time it right he really won’t melt much.

7. Advent Calendar Helper

If you always forget to move the advent calendar on (this has been the bane of my life at times!), let the Elf do it for you. Stick him in front of it holding the next chocolate for the kids. Super easy.

Tie a string across the room and hook a candy cane onto it. Place the Elf on the cane so he looks mid-zip – still simple but looks impressive!

13. Sock Hammock

Our kids loved this one, especially when we told them to search the living room for their elf! Stretch a clean sock between two branches of the Christmas tree. The Elf can lounge inside like he’s having a lazy day.

Set up some mini photo props (a paper moustache, glasses, Santa hat) and position the Elf with an instant camera (we use our daughter’s Kodak instant camera!). Leave a few funny “selfies” nearby.

3. Do I need the official Elf doll? Are there alternatives? 

Not at all. Whilst you can buy an ‘elf on the shelf’ from Amazon or many other stores online, any Elf figure (or cheeky toy) works fine. I know people who use a festive mouse as the elf was deemed too creepy (they may have a point!). Kindness elves are apparently also a thing that might be a good alternative.

4. How many nights do I need to cover?
