5 Ways Parents Can Spot a Positive School Environment

Posted on February 25, 2025May 23, 2025 By Becky

Are you about to enroll your children in school, and you want to ensure that it’s a positive environment? Or are your children already enrolled, and you’re unsure if the school is the right fit for them? This helpful article will discuss five ways that parents can determine whether a school environment is positive for their children. Any seasoned teacher and educational leader who has completed Ed.D programs online can tell you the importance of fostering a positive school environment. So, read on to learn about what makes a school environment positive for your kids.

  • Speak With Your Child’s Teachers

It is worth speaking to your child or children’s teachers to gauge how engaged they are with the teaching process, how they think of your child, and what their attitude is in general. If the teacher avoids a meeting or tries to delay the meeting, this might be a warning sign. However, suppose they are enthusiastic about meeting and happily engage with you. In that case, this can be a sign that the school environment is positive. Also, if they seem stressed, burnt out, or frazzled, there might be some systemic issues at the school. Alternatively, if they are happy, upbeat, and positive, this is a good sign about the school itself.

  • Pay Attention to Your Child’s Performance

You should pay close attention to how your child performs academically at their school, as this is a strong indicator of the school’s culture and performance. If they get good grades, are learning what they should be, and are at the level where they should be according to the curriculum, this is a good sign. Another sign that the school has a positive environment is that if your kid falls behind, the school identifies this and makes them a learning plan so they can catch up in time. This should give you an idea if the school environment is positive or not.

  • Look into the Community’s Perception of the School

This is perhaps a tip for those looking for the best school for their kid or kids. You should ask around the local community and try to get a sense of the local perception of the school. Ask family friends with school-aged children where they send their kids and why. You could also browse the internet and look for reviews of the schools in your area, including Catholic schools, ensuring that the ones you are considering are considered positively by the local community. People will be happy to share about their experiences with a certain school, whether they have been positive or negative. So, ensure that you ask around and get a vibe check on the schools you are considering sending your kids to.

  • How Your Child Feels at School

Your child’s experience of their school shouldn’t be discounted when you’re thinking about how positive the school environment is. How connected and engaged are they with other students? Are they making connections and friendships at school? What is their relationship with their teachers like? Ask your child about how they feel about the school and if they are enjoying being there. Take what they say at face value, as their opinions and feelings are important, as they’re spending so much time there, after all. If your child is reluctant to go to school in the morning or outright refuses, this could be a sign that they don’t feel safe or supported in the school environment.

  • What Support is Offered?

Finally, consider what support is offered by the school for students. Do they have inclusion, disability, and well-being programs? Do they offer tailored learning plans for kids who are at risk of falling behind? How do they support kids from disadvantaged families or who may be in poverty or at risk? Ask to see their specific policies around these aspects of the school, and this should give you some keen insight into how positive the school environment is. A great school will offer support to kids and parents when and where they need it.

The Path to Positive Schooling

This informative article covers five key ways that parents can spot a positive school environment. Work your way through this list when considering a school for your kid or kids or if you’re wondering whether or not their current school is fit for purpose.

2 weeks ago we moved S into her first proper ‘big girl’ bed, and said ‘so’long’ to the cot, the cot which we’d had for 3 1/2 years and that had housed F too. Once the new bed had been ordered, and even when it arrived, I didn’t really feel…
