5 Signs You’re Owed A Lot Of Money

Posted on September 19, 2025 By Becky

A lot of people are owed a lot of money, but many of them simply don’t realize it. They think that their financial status is just the way it is and there’s nothing much they can do about it.

But, of course, that’s not always the case. Often, they’re owed money and don’t even realize it.

What’s more, that person could be you. You could be the individual who is owed money.

But what are the signs? How do you know that a lot of money should be coming your way?

Your Bank Or Utility Accounts Are Dormant

One sign you might be owed money is if your bank and utility accounts suddenly go dormant. Often, companies will close your accounts and send you letters in writing, but it is unusual for them to personally call or remind you. Because of this, a lot of people have bank accounts or credit accounts with money in them, and they don’t even realize. Furthermore, these institutions will usually maintain information on account balances, just in case you ever decide to claim the money.

That’s why it is worth going back to them and asking them about any money they owe you. Usually, they will just transfer what they owe to your new account.

You Have A History For Forgotten Family Assets

Another sign you might be owed a lot of money is if agencies like Heir Hunters are trying to get in touch with you. If you have a lot of forgotten or historical assets in your family, that increases the likelihood of being owed money substantially.

Many people have missing or forgotten assets in their family lines that simply don’t show up on normal searches. If that sounds like you, then you could be in for a windfall.

You Have Insurance Policies Going Back Years

It’s also worth checking your insurance policies if they go back years. Lapsed life insurance or unused annuities can be worth a lot of money.

You might even have forgotten stocks and shares in various investment accounts. Again, these can sometimes be worth a lot of money, but hiding away where you can’t see them.

You Have Changed Address Several Times

Another sign you’re owed money is if you’ve changed addresses several times in recent years. If you’ve done that a lot, then it can be harder for people who know that you’re owed money to track you down.

Therefore, check things like unclaimed offices and tax refunds if you’ve been moving from one jurisdiction or state to another.

You Have Missing Old Paychecks

Finally, you can sometimes get a windfall payment if you’re missing old paychecks from an employer, or if you’ve switched up your jobs. You may find that you’re actually owed quite a bit of money, and that you haven’t cashed all the benefits you’re legally entitled to take.

So there you have it: some of the signs that you’re owed a lot of money but that you’re not taking advantage of it.
