4 Signs An Injury Needs Extra Attention

Posted on January 15, 2026 By Becky

We all get injured from time to time, and on most occasions, we just need a bit of ice and some rest before getting back on our feet like normal. However, sometimes an injury can end up being worse than we first realise and might not be one we can just shrug off and get on with. Below are a few signs to watch out for to see if your injury might need a bit of attention

Stops You From Daily Activities

If you’ve got an injury that is stopping you from doing simple everyday tasks like getting dressed, performing your job or showering, then you need to seek some help. An injury that isn’t too bad shouldn’t be impacting your day-to-day life to the point that you can’t function. Even if it’s an older injury, it might be worth reaching out and getting occupational therapy to help you function better everyday whilst you have and recover from your injury.

Pain Is Lasting Longer Than Expected

Most pain, as a result of an injury that isn’t too serious, should start to decrease after around 24 to 28 hours. If it doesn’t, then you should start to think it might be a bit more significant than what you first thought. Pain that also doesn’t improve with rest, ice or medication could also signify that something a little more serious could be going on. If any of this is the case, then you shouldn’t ignore it. Make sure you take care of yourself and consider seeking professional help, like contacting your GP.

Appearance Gets Significantly Worse

Sometimes you’ll have an accident and everything can seem fine at first, maybe just a bit of pain, but after a while, things can get noticeably worse. Areas that start to significantly swell up are definitely a real cause for concern, as is any bruising which spreads or worsens very quickly. You want to be extra cautious if you notice the injury changing colour, like it turns more blue – that’s when you might want to get yourself down to A&E pretty quickly. These could all signify that you’ve broken a bone, so with any of these symptoms, it’s worth getting an X-ray to check.

Signs Of Infection

Quite often when we have an accident, there’ll be a cut or wound left behind and normally you’ll just pop on a plaster and call it a day. Even if the cut is small, it’s still worth keeping an eye on. Any increasing redness, swelling, pus and or temperature could be signs that your injury has become infected. If that happens you want to seek help immediately so you can get the infection treated asap before any other complications occur. Cuts and open wounds, no matter the size, can all lead to you developing some kind of infection, so look out for signs and symptoms.

Not every injury needs a lot of attention and consideration, but when they do, it can be hard to immediately know the signs. Most of the time it’ll be a lot more apparent that you need to take some kind of action to help heal an injury. So look out for the signs and don’t be afraid to get help when you need it.
