3 Insights To Help You Think Of Bathroom Design

Posted on November 6, 2025 By Becky

A bathroom, in concept, is pretty simple. You obviously need a toilet, a sink, and your choice of washing option. Bathroom implies the existence of a bathtub of course, but if you just want a shower unit or to make the space a wet room, that much is possible too.

However, within those options are many decisions to take before you go on. For example, if your parents are now living with you, could installing an accessible shower with a walk-in gate and seated area be better for them too? What flooring will you go for, outside of carpet (please, never carpet), and which is best for the general climate of where you live?

It can be dizzying to come to these decisions. After all, and we don’t mean to be dismissive, but it’s not like every homeowner is a bathroom expert. You may have help from services such as Mr Remodel contractors, but you still need to consider and discuss the design you want.

In this post, we’ll discuss how to think about this process, so your creativity can shine through a little easier:

Think About Plumbing Arrangements & Orientation

Where your pipes are currently located will influence what you can do with the space. Refitting the plumbing entirely can be expensive, but it can also give you more room and isn’t too difficult to accomplish. However, if you’re working with an older home, the toilet and sink are probably where they are for a reason, and refitting them to the opposite wall will demand, at minimum, rerouting pipes through floors or walls. That’s doable, but it adds to your budget and timeline.

However, sometimes a few extensions by a plumber mean there’s a way to get close to what you want but not with the requirement of doing major plumbing work. But if you want to refit the entire space, think of plumbing first and foremost.

Plan How Light & Space Work Together

If you’re lucky enough to have a window, you’ll want to design around it, because nothing is more dingy than a dark wet bathroom. If you think about where the light falls during different times of day, you can plan how that affects where you position mirrors or the shower. A mirror catching morning light can brighten the whole room, but if it’s placed badly, you might find that the light is minimal but the privacy cost is pretty high.

We’d suggest that in most bathrooms, lighter colors on the walls and floor can make the space feel bigger than it is. Dark tiles look nice of course, but can make a compact bathroom feel cramped if you’re not careful. However, if you’re set on darker tones, try using them as accents and keeping the larger surfaces light.

Plan Storage Around Daily Use

You need somewhere to put toiletries, towels, and cleaning supplies, but built-in storage takes up any floor space that you might not have, especially in an en suite space. Wall-mounted cabinets or recessed shelving is good, as it can give you storage if you only store what you use daily.

If you’re sharing the bathroom with family, double sinks can also be nice, especially if you have a larger room. But as ever, be honest about whether you’ll use both the space in sync, or if that space would be better spent on a larger shower or more storage.

With this advice, we hope you can think of bathroom design with comfort and confidence.
