17 Statement Piece Ideas For Your Living Room

Posted on August 13, 2024March 30, 2026 By Becky

In home decor, a statement piece is an item designed to grab people’s attention. Adding a statement piece to your living room can be a great way to make it feel more unique and sophisticated.

A living room statement piece should ideally be something that isn’t the sofa or the TV. It should be something else that not every living room has. This could be an item that tells people about your personality, an item that reflects your culture or heritage, or an item that you simply find fun and interesting.

Below are just a few examples of statement pieces you could consider. Try not to add anymore than two statement pieces to your living room to prevent the room feeling too busy.

Chaise lounge

A chaise lounge is a sofa with only half a backrest and a single armrest, designed for half-sitting and half-lying relaxation. While many sectional sofas incorporate chaise lounges, opting for a standalone chaise lounge can create a more striking feature in your space. Whether you prefer a traditional or modern style, browsing FurnitureInstore can provide inspiration for both sofas and chaise lounges, helping you find the perfect piece to elevate your living room’s design.

Egg chair

For a unique alternative to an armchair, why not consider an egg chair? Egg chairs were popularised in the 60s and 70s and still remain a standout piece of furniture. They can make great cosy features in the corner of a room. It’s worth taking the time to explore different colours and designs

Rocking chair

Rocking chairs are another fun alternative to a regular armchair. Their rocking ability can help improve circulation in those that are old and immobile, while also being useful for new parents trying to soothe babies to sleep. But even if you don’t have mobility problems or a baby, such chairs can be great for relaxing in.

Abstract sculpture

Need something to liven up your side table or coffee table? A small abstract sculpture could be an interesting statement piece. Stone or metal sculptures inspired by the likes of Henry Moore and Jean Arp are some of the most popular options, but you may find other sculptures that appeal to you.

Large wall art

A large wall painting is ideal for hanging on a wall above a sofa opposite a TV. The subject of this painting is up to you, but should ideally be something you find interesting or meaningful. Large wall paintings can help to set the tone of a room. A relaxing landscape is often best suited to a quiet living room where people go to chill out, whereas a vibrant abstract painting is best suited to a living room where people socialise and play games.

Oversized houseplant

Houseplants can make a living room feel more connected to the outdoors, improve air quality and figuratively (and literally) breathe life into a room. While most people opt for small windowsill plants or coffee table plants, you’ll make more of a statement if you go for a larger plant. Floorstanding fiddle leaf trees and yucca plants can create a more lively burst of green and are great for contrasting the synthetic materials found in many modern living rooms. Make sure to research the watering and sunlight needs of your houseplant to help promote healthy growth.

Antique treasure chest

Adding an antique chest to a living room could have many benefits. Firstly, they’re a great storage solution. Secondly, they can add some history to your living room. Such a chest could even make a unique coffee table. If you’re customizing your own coffee table as a statement piece, check out this helpful guide on attaching legs to a table to ensure it’s both sturdy and stylish. You can find antique chests online or in second-hand stores. Don’t worry about buying a chest that’s slightly battered as this can add to its historical charm.

Natural stone coffee table

Another potential alternative coffee table solution could be a natural stone coffee table. Most coffee tables are made from wood or glass. A stone coffee table is more unique and can create a sense of opulence and sophistication. Unfortunately, such coffee tables aren’t cheap – especially ones made of marble or granite. Imitation stone coffee tables are much cheaper.

Photo gallery wall

Lots of people display photos around their living room. However, a photo gallery wall can be a more unique way of displaying photos. This is a chance to display lots of different memories or photos of lots of different people who are meaningful to you. Such galleries can be a great conversation starter and can make your living room feel more personal. Ideally, choose a wall away from your TV so that they’re not too much of a distraction.

Large wall mirror

A mirror could make another great statement piece – particularly a large wall mirror opposite a TV. This could be a mirror with a frame for a traditional and ornate look, or a frameless mirror for a modern look. There could even be more unique mirror styles to explore. Mirrors are great for not just seeing your reflection, but for making a room feel bigger and reflecting light.

Exposed brick wall

A feature wall could be another way to make a statement in your living room. This is a wall that stands out from the rest of the walls. One way to make a wall stand out could be to strip it back to the brickwork. This could give your living room a more cosy and rustic feel. If you don’t want to physically strip the wall back, there are ways to create an exposed brick effect that could be worth exploring.

Electric fireplace

Fireplaces were once the centrepiece of a living room. Nowadays, fewer homes have them, making them more of a standout feature. Electric fireplaces are much easier and less expensive to install than real fireplaces, and they can provide a sense of warmth without being messy or as much of a fire risk. You can explore many different styles of electric fireplace online.

Upright piano

Always wanted to learn piano? Or perhaps you already know how to play? Either way, a piano could make a great statement piece. Most people do not have the money or space for a grand piano. Upright pianos on the other hand can be manoeuvred into most homes and can be bought cheaply second hand or rented.

Grandfather clock

When it comes to statement clocks, the grandfather clock is the ultimate example. These clocks can provide a sense of history and flair to any living room. Some grandfather clocks are silent, while others tick or chime on the hour. You can buy antique grandfather clocks online or at select antique shops.

Modern LED chandelier

Overhead light fittings can also serve as a statement piece. Rather than opting for a single bulb and lampshade or even a traditional multi-arm light fitting, consider instead choosing a modern LED chandelier. These come in all kinds of wacky shapes and styles and are more likely to stand out. They can also be fantastic for brightening up the whole room.

Fish aquarium

Fish tanks are attention-grabbing features that can also bring a sense of calm to a room. Such a tank could contain goldfish or tropical fish, and could be used to house all kinds of ornaments. Fish are typically considered a low maintenance pet, however you do still need to be willing to regularly feed your fish and clean the tank.

Giant rug

Covering the floor of your living room with a giant rug could be another way to make a statement. This could be a colourful rug or a rug with an eye-catching pattern to further grab people’s attention. Rugs are best placed over hard floors to provide a sense of cosiness to a living room.
