Standing Desk

Why Standing Desks Cause Unexpected Lower Body Pain

Posted on November 7, 2026 By Becky

A standing desk can ease hours of sitting, but standing still for too long creates its own set of problems. Aching feet, tight calves and sore knees often appear when remote workers switch positions without adjusting their schedule or workstation. The desk itself may not be the main issue. How long you stand, how you distribute your weight and how your screen is positioned all affect the lower body.

The Hidden Strain of Prolonged Standing

Standing uses more muscle activity than sitting, yet the body still needs regular movement. If you remain in one position for an hour, the calf muscles work continuously to keep you stable. Pressure also builds under the heels and forefeet, especially on a hard floor or in unsupportive footwear.

Guidance on standing desk benefits recommends changing position instead of treating standing as an all-day replacement for sitting. Start with 15 to 20 minutes of standing, then sit or walk briefly. Alternate throughout the day and pay attention to early signs such as tingling, heaviness or a dull ache.

How Poor Alignment Affects the Knees

Knee pain often begins with small postural habits. Locking your knees shifts stress onto the joints, while leaning into one hip creates uneven loading through the pelvis, legs and feet. A desk that is too high may also encourage you to lift your shoulders and push your hips forward.

Keep both feet about hip-width apart and soften your knees slightly. Your weight should feel evenly spread across the heel and front of each foot. If you repeatedly shift onto one leg during video calls, place a small reminder beside the monitor to reset your stance. Persistent pain, swelling, instability or difficulty bearing weight calls for a medical assessment.

Exploring Muscular Skeletal Treatment Options

Pain that continues after changing your routine may need professional evaluation. A clinician can assess joint movement, muscle strength, walking patterns and footwear to identify where excess strain is developing. For NHS patients facing long waits for help with foot, ankle or lower-limb pain, private Muscular Skeletal Treatment can include assessment and options such as bespoke insole orthotics, 3D-printed orthotics or injections when clinically appropriate.

Avoid diagnosing the problem from its location alone. Knee discomfort can relate to the foot, ankle, hip or workload. Seek prompt medical advice if pain follows an injury or comes with redness, marked warmth, severe swelling or fever.

Upgrading Your At-Home Ergonomics Setup

Set the desk so your elbows rest close to a 90-degree angle while typing. The top portion of the monitor should sit around eye level, with the screen directly in front of you. If you use a laptop, an external keyboard and mouse allow you to raise the screen without lifting your hands. These adjustments are part of creating a comfortable home office setup, where practical workspace improvements can support everyday comfort and productivity.

Floor conditions matter too. Wear stable, comfortable footwear if the room has hard flooring and consider a supportive standing mat. The ups and downs of standing desks also reinforce the value of switching between sitting and standing. Save two desk presets if your model allows it, then change position every 30 to 45 minutes.

Daily Mobility Drills for Remote Workers

Short mobility breaks can prevent stiffness from building across the workday. Every hour, walk around the room for two minutes. Follow that with 10 slow calf raises while holding the desk lightly, then stretch each calf for 20 to 30 seconds with the heel kept on the floor.

Ankle circles can restore movement after standing still. Lift one foot slightly and draw five controlled circles in each direction before changing sides. For the hips, step one foot back and gently tuck the pelvis until you feel a mild stretch at the front of the hip.

Keep every movement comfortable and stop if it produces sharp pain, numbness or increasing symptoms. Your next standing session should end while your legs still feel fresh, not once discomfort forces you back into the chair.
