Finding the Right Dates for Your Family Ski Getaway Posted on November 2, 2026 By Becky A family ski trip can feel wonderfully simple once you’re standing on the mountain. Getting everyone there at the right time takes a little more thought. School terms narrow your options. Popular weeks can stretch the budget, and travelling with children means that a 6 am flight is no longer an option. Choosing your dates carefully can make the whole holiday feel easier. Start with the School Calendar If your children attend school, term dates will usually provide the starting point. Check the calendar published by their school or local authority. Once you know your available dates, think about how they fit with the wider ski season. Christmas and February half-term often attract families because they sit neatly within school holidays, while Easter can work well when it falls earlier in the season. Snow conditions naturally vary by year and resort, so families travelling later may prefer higher-altitude destinations where skiing typically continues further into spring. If you have younger children, a shorter break during half-term may feel manageable, while older children who already ski confidently could make good use of a longer Easter trip. Be Flexible Within Your Fixed Dates School holidays may give you a fixed window, but your departure and return days can still have some wiggle room. Instead of automatically searching Saturday to Saturday, compare departures a day or two either side where your schedule allows. That small shift could reveal different flight times, accommodation options, or transfer arrangements. When comparing ski holidays, look at the total trip rather than assuming the most obvious dates will offer the best fit. Think About the Journey as Well as the Slopes Your travel dates shape more than the price. A very early flight may save money, but getting two children out of bed at 3 am can leave everyone exhausted before you even reach the resort. Compare door-to-door travel times before you book. An afternoon arrival that lets you unpack, hire equipment, and have an early dinner may set you up better for ski school the following morning. The same applies on the way home. A slightly later departure can give you a calmer final morning instead of turning your last day into a race to the airport. Give Yourself More Time to Plan Family ski trips involve several moving parts. Start comparing options once you know which school-holiday window you want to use. If you have specific requirements, such as an apartment within walking distance of the lifts or morning lessons for several children, prioritise those before chasing small savings elsewhere. You can also spread the practical jobs across the weeks before departure. Sort travel documents first, then equipment or clothing, followed by lessons, transfers and any extras you need. That approach makes it less likely that you will find yourself trying to organise everything the weekend before you fly. Make the Calendar Work for You The “right” week looks different for every family. Your children’s school dates may set the boundaries, but work commitments, travel tolerance, skiing ability and budget should help you settle on the final choice. Put two or three realistic date combinations side by side and compare the complete picture. A well-chosen date will not remove every unpredictable part of a family holiday, but it can give you something valuable before you even zip up your ski jacket: a trip that fits comfortably into real family life.
