Only the Essentials: The Art of Travelling Light without Feeling Unprepared Posted on August 14, 2026 By Becky More and more travellers are discovering that there are very real benefits to packing light, beyond just spending less time wrestling with heavy suitcases. Smaller bags can help you avoid ever-increasing airline baggage fees, and whether you’re catching a train across Europe or flying abroad, it just makes the whole journey feel simpler. But there’s no need to worry about going without the things you need. Packing light is all about making every item earn its place in your suitcase – so you stay comfortable, dress well and still leave plenty of room to spare. Read on for some practical ways to pack lighter without feeling unprepared. Take versatile clothing that does more than one job The easiest way to reduce luggage is to pack clothing that will work for multiple occasions. You don’t need separate outfits for sightseeing, dinners and evenings on the town. Just look for pieces that you can adapt with a few styling changes – such as a small collection of women’s black dresses. A simple black midi dress works with trainers as a casual look for exploring a city and also pairs well with sandals or heels for an evening of fine dining. If the weather is variable, just add a lightweight cardigan, denim jacket or scarf over the top. Create outfits before packing Before you start filling your suitcase, spend a few minutes to plan a few complete outfits by laying everything out and checking that each top works with the same trousers, skirt or shorts. Choose a neutral colour palette (think black, white, navy and beige) to make it easier to mix and match different combinations. This way, you can immediately spot unnecessary items before they make it into your luggage. Pack essentials and leave behind ‘just-in-case’ items If you have a history of overpacking, it might be because you’re worried about unexpected situations. The reality is that most of these ‘just in case’ items will lie unused at the bottom of the suitcase throughout your trip. Instead, focus on the essentials. Travel documents, medication, device chargers and power banks, and a first-aid kit deserve space. A sixth jumper or three extra outfits usually won’t. Use smart packing to maximise suitcase space How you pack matters as much as what you pack. Roll up clothes to save space and reduce creases (you’ll save time on ironing, too). Investing in a set of packing cubes is a good way to keep everything organised and easy to find. Group clothing by outfit or activity (hiking, city walks) to make unpacking quicker and avoid rummaging through your suitcase every morning. Pack less and enjoy your trip more Travelling light is more important than ever. But don’t worry that you’ll be sacrificing comfort or making your trip less enjoyable. The secret is to pack with purpose so you can spend less time hauling around your luggage and more time enjoying the actual journey.
