How Long Should a Dog Chew Last? What to Look For Before You Buy

Posted on June 26, 2026 By Becky

A dog chew that’s gone in ten minutes feels like a waste of money, no matter how cheap it was. So how long should a chew actually last?

Most veterinary guidance points to a dog chew session of roughly 20 to 40 minutes as a healthy range, with the chew removed once it’s worn down to a small, swallowable piece. That’s the window most vets recommend, and a chew that lasts well beyond that often means it’s too hard for safe chewing in the first place. But that range is a starting point, not a guarantee, since how long any specific chew actually lasts depends heavily on the dog and the chew itself.

Here’s what actually affects how long a chew lasts in practice, and what to look for before you buy.

1. Your Dog’s Chewing Style Matters More Than the Chew Itself

The same chew can last twenty minutes for one dog and several days for another, and the difference usually comes down to chewing style rather than the product. Aggressive chewers work through material fast and with a lot of force, while gentle chewers take their time and apply far less pressure per bite. Neither style is wrong, but they need different products to get a similar duration of engagement.

Before buying based on a “long lasting” label, it helps to know which category your dog actually falls into. A chew that’s genuinely long-lasting for a casual chewer might disappear in one aggressive session for a power chewer, which isn’t a flaw in the product. It’s a mismatch between the chew and the dog.

2. Density and Ingredient Composition Drive Real Duration

A chew’s actual density, how tightly packed and solid the material is, has a direct effect on how long it holds up under repeated biting. Natural, minimally processed chews tend to be denser and more consistent than chews padded with fillers or lower-quality byproducts, which can break down faster and unevenly.

When looking for long lasting dog chews, you want to ideally go for dried, natural options with no filler additives, because the presence of filler material creates inconsistency between pieces that makes them break apart sooner. Natural dog treat brands like Bully Bunches source their bully sticks from 100% beef material, which is part of why owners report longer chewing sessions compared to chews blended with multiple ingredients of varying texture and density.

3. Size Should Match Your Dog, Not Just Their Weight

A chew that’s technically rated for your dog’s weight class isn’t automatically the right size if it doesn’t match their mouth or jaw strength. A small chew given to a strong, motivated chewer disappears fast simply because there’s less material to work through, regardless of how dense it is. A chew that’s too large for a smaller dog’s mouth can also be harder for them to grip and chew effectively, which sometimes means they give up on it rather than wearing it down slowly.

Picking a size based on actual mouth size and chewing strength, not just the weight range printed on the package, gives a much more realistic estimate of how long a chew will actually keep your dog occupied.

4. Consistent Sizing Means Consistent Duration

This is an underrated factor that a lot of buyers don’t think to check. If a brand’s chews vary significantly in thickness or length from one piece to the next, duration becomes unpredictable even within the same bag. One stick might last twenty minutes while another lasts an hour, purely because one treat is smaller than the other, rather than anything your dog is doing differently.

Brands that hand-sort or weigh their chews to keep sizing consistent tend to produce a more reliable chewing experience overall, since each piece offers roughly the same amount of material to work through.

5. Storage and Freshness Affect How Long a Chew Holds Up

A chew that’s gone stale, dried out unevenly, or absorbed moisture from improper storage won’t perform the way it’s supposed to, even if it’s a high-quality product to begin with. Chews stored in humid conditions can soften unpredictably, while those left exposed to air for too long can become brittle and break apart faster.

Keeping chews in a cool, dry, sealed container until they’re given to your dog is a simple step that protects both the texture and the duration you’re actually paying for.

Conclusion

There’s no single answer to how long a dog chew should last, because the honest answer depends on your dog’s chewing style, the chew’s density and ingredients, the size match, how consistent the sizing is across the batch, and how well it’s been stored before use.

Understanding these factors turns “long-lasting” from a vague label into something you can actually evaluate before you buy, which means fewer disappointing five-minute chews and a lot less guessing at the shelf.
