How to Continue Reading Even with Eye Strain

Posted on May 15, 2026 By Becky

For many people, reading is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Whether it is enjoying a favorite novel before bed, studying for work, or catching up on the latest news, reading plays a major role in everyday life. However, eye strain can quickly turn this enjoyable habit into an uncomfortable experience.

Long periods of reading, especially on digital devices, can leave the eyes feeling tired, dry, and irritated. Many people notice headaches, blurred vision, or difficulty focusing after only a short amount of time. The good news is that eye strain does not necessarily mean you need to give up reading altogether. With the right adjustments and support, you can continue reading comfortably while protecting your eye health.

Take More Frequent Breaks

One of the simplest ways to reduce eye strain is to take regular breaks while reading. The eyes need opportunities to relax and refocus. A popular technique is the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something around 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce tension in the eye muscles and prevents fatigue from building up too quickly. Short breaks are especially important during long reading sessions or when working on screens throughout the day.

Improve Your Lighting

Lighting has a major impact on reading comfort. Reading in dim conditions forces the eyes to strain harder to focus, while harsh lighting can create glare and irritation. Natural light is often the best option, but if that is not available, using a soft desk lamp positioned behind you can help create a more comfortable reading environment. Adjustable brightness settings on digital devices can also make a significant difference. Avoid reading in complete darkness with only a screen for illumination, as this increases eye fatigue and may disrupt sleep patterns later in the evening.

Increase Text Size

Many people continue reading tiny text without realizing how much pressure it places on their eyes. Increasing font size on phones, tablets, e-readers, and computers can dramatically improve comfort. Printed books can also become easier to manage with the help of magnification or dedicated reading glasses designed for close-up focus.

Choose the Right Reading Glasses

One of the most effective ways to continue reading comfortably is by wearing properly fitted reading glasses. The right lenses reduce the effort required to focus, helping minimize headaches and eye fatigue.

Many readers benefit from having glasses specifically designed for reading instead of relying on general-use prescription lenses. This can make long reading sessions far more enjoyable and less tiring. For those looking for stylish and practical options, Just Glasses stock a wide range of reading glasses suitable for different strengths, styles, and preferences. Having the correct pair of reading glasses can make a noticeable difference in comfort and overall eye health.

Keep Your Eyes Hydrated

When concentrating on reading, people blink less often. This causes tears to evaporate more quickly, leading to dryness and irritation. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help support healthy tear production. Some people also benefit from lubricating eye drops, especially when spending long hours reading or using digital screens. Blinking more consciously while reading on devices may also reduce dryness.

Reduce Screen Exposure Where Possible

Although digital reading is convenient, switching to printed books occasionally can help reduce screen-related fatigue. E-readers with paper-like displays may also feel gentler on the eyes compared to bright tablets or smartphones. Limiting screen use before bedtime is particularly important, as blue light exposure may interfere with sleep quality and leave the eyes feeling even more strained the next day.

Protecting Your Love of Reading

Reading should remain a relaxing and rewarding activity, not a painful one. By taking better care of your eyes and using the right tools, it is possible to continue reading comfortably for years to come.
