How To Make Your Home How You Want It

Posted on April 13, 2026 By Becky

Getting your home to feel how you want it isn’t something you want to do without any thought or planning – you want it to be as comfortable and pleasant to be in as possible, so it’s definitely worth taking some time to get right. And of course, you’ll need to think about the big things and the small ones to make it work for you, which is another reason not to rush. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you get started.

Start With How You Use The Space

Before you change anything, it’s going to be useful to think about how you actually use your home – and that doesn’t mean how you think you should use it or how other people use theirs because if you go down that route, it’s just not going to be comfortable for you, and that’s the point of taking your time over it all.

So ask yourself some questions like how you move around the place, where you sit the most, which rooms you spend the most time in, and so on, and once you know what’s what, it becomes a lot easier to make changes that will improve things.

Change One Thing At A Time

It’s always tempting to try to do everything at once, either because you’re excited to get going or because you just want to get it all done so you can enjoy it (and often it’s a mix of both things). However, it’s actually best to change one thing, then live with it for a while to make sure it works, and then move on to something else.

So you could rearrange one room, for example, swap your lighting, clear a space, and so on, and making those small adjustments to start with could be just what you need to show you what else needs doing and when you’ve done enough.

Don’t Forget The Practical Things

Sometimes making your home work better means dealing with practical things first, and that might be improving the storage, fixing awkward layouts, updating things that don’t work, and other similar ideas.

For example, if your lighting doesn’t suit how you need to use a room, bringing in an electrician to adjust it can make a big difference, especially if it means you want to use the room more or it becomes a nicer space to spend some time in.

Let It Reflect You

It sounds quite obvious, but it’s easy to forget that your home should reflect what you actually like, rather than following trends for the sake of it that you don’t actually really want all that much.

You can make your home look and feel however you like, and if you want to mix styles, have lots of souvenirs, keep things simple, or anything else, that’s entirely your choice. The point is to be happy with the end result, otherwise you’ll never feel like you’ve finished the work, and you’ll probably get quite stressed over it all. Who needs that?

Extra Tips to Make Your Home Work for You

Focus on lighting layers
Use a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create a more flexible and comfortable space.

Declutter before you decorate
Clearing out what you don’t need helps you see the space more clearly and makes any changes more effective.

Think about flow between rooms
Make sure your layout allows you to move easily from one area to another without obstacles or awkward transitions.

Add texture for warmth
Soft furnishings like rugs, cushions, and throws can instantly make a space feel more inviting.

Use colour thoughtfully
You don’t need to repaint everything—adding colour through accessories can be a simple way to refresh a room.

Make use of vertical space
Shelving and wall storage can free up floor space and make smaller rooms feel bigger.

Balance style with comfort
A room might look great, but if it’s not comfortable to use, it won’t feel like home.

FAQs About Creating Your Ideal Home

How do I start redesigning my home?
Begin by assessing how you use your space and identifying what isn’t working. Small, intentional changes are often the best starting point.

Do I need a big budget to improve my home?
No, many effective changes—like rearranging furniture, decluttering, or updating accessories—can be done on a small budget.

How long does it take to make a home feel “right”?
It varies, but taking a gradual approach helps you make better decisions and avoid costly mistakes.

Should I follow interior design trends?
Only if you genuinely like them. Your home should reflect your personal style rather than trends that may quickly go out of fashion.

What’s the most important room to focus on first?
Start with the space you use the most, as improvements there will have the biggest impact on your daily life.

How can I make a small home feel bigger?
Use light colours, mirrors, smart storage, and good lighting to create a more open and airy feel.

When should I hire a professional?
If you’re dealing with structural changes, electrical work, or major renovations, it’s best to bring in a qualified expert.
