The data collected by the Office for National Statistics, NimbleFins, and a Mumsnet survey of 500 parents in late 2024 puts some hard figures around what UK families with children actually spend. The numbers are higher than most people estimate — and the gap between what families budget and what they spend is one of the more consistent findings across all the research.

What the Abroad vs Staycation Gap Actually Looks Like

A week abroad for a family of four runs to approximately £3,628 on average, based on NimbleFins calculations using ONS Travel Trends figures and inflation data through the end of 2024. That figure covers flights, accommodation, food, drink, and entertainment. It does not include travel insurance, airport parking, or pre-holiday spending on clothing, sun cream, and luggage.

A week in the UK comes in cheaper at a GoCompare-calculated average of £2,765 for summer 2025 — but not by as much as many families expect. UK holiday accommodation carries 20% VAT; the equivalent in much of Europe is zero-rated or heavily reduced. That structural tax difference closes the gap between staying home and flying out considerably.

The Mumsnet survey found that families who actively holiday — those taking at least one main trip per year — planned to spend £6,800 in total across all travel in 2025, with £4,025 going to the main family holiday alone. That figure sits well above the broader Legal and General estimate of £2,005, which averaged across all households including those who take no holidays at all.

School Holidays and the Price Spike

The single biggest cost driver for UK family holidays is timing. Package holiday prices during school breaks run an average of 9% higher than during term time, according to GoCompare’s analysis of pricing data for the top four destinations visited by UK families — Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. For Spain specifically, the premium reaches 20%, adding an average of £337 per person. For a family of four, that’s over £1,300 in extra costs for the same week-long trip.

This creates a calculation that thousands of families are running every summer. The fine for taking a child out of school without authorisation starts at £80 per parent, per child, rising to £160 if unpaid within 21 days. A second offence within three years triggers the £160 rate immediately. A third can lead to prosecution.

Despite the penalties, 459,288 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued in England in 2024–25 for unauthorised school absences, according to Department for Education figures — a record high and a 4% increase on the previous year. Of those, 93% related to term-time holidays. That total is up 69% compared to pre-pandemic levels. On average, parents who took term-time holidays reported saving £567 per trip, with 16% saving over £1,000.

Where the Money Actually Goes

Flights account for roughly £900 of the overseas total for a family of four — approximately £232 per person, adjusted from ONS data by NimbleFins. That share can drop considerably for European short-haul trips or rise substantially for long-haul destinations. For a peak-season package to Turkey in August 2025, Which? analysis found the total for four came to £5,184.

Once families arrive, the pattern of overspending is well-documented. The Post Office Family Holiday Costs Barometer consistently identifies food and drink as the primary area where actual spend exceeds the pre-holiday estimate. Across the research, 67% of families overspend on holiday, with nearly three-quarters of those overspending by 55% or more above their original budget.

On-the-ground spending breaks down into four main categories that consistently push the final bill upward:

• Food and drink: families planned an average of £566 for this category but spent £312 more, largely through eating out more frequently than intended.
• Children’s beach extras: items such as inflatables, ice creams, pedalo rides, and waterpark entries cost between £179 and £290 for a family of four across one week, according to the Post Office Barometer.
• Activities and entry fees: UK families reported an average of £378 spent on activities per trip, with over 90% spending something in this category regardless of initial budget.
• Extras at the airport and on travel days: parking, food at the terminal, last-minute travel accessories, and luggage fees add costs that most families do not account for during the planning stage.

What the Data Means for Planning in 2026

The gap between what families intend to spend and what they actually spend on holiday has not narrowed meaningfully over the past decade. The reasons are structural: school holiday premiums lock most families into peak-demand windows, UK accommodation VAT adds a cost that equivalent European destinations do not carry, and the social dynamics of travelling with children push discretionary spending upward once the trip is underway.

ABTA reports that in 2024, UK families took an average of 1.7 holidays abroad and 2.2 domestic breaks per year. For a family operating at or near that average, the combined annual outlay on travel — before any of the on-holiday extras — runs to somewhere between £5,000 and £7,000, depending on destination choices and timing.

The research does not show a clear path to dramatically lower costs for families locked into school holiday windows. What it does show is where the money goes, which categories are most likely to exceed estimates, and which timing choices carry the biggest price consequences. That’s the kind of granular picture that makes it possible to budget accurately rather than optimistically — and it suggests the family holiday, in 2026, is comfortably one of the largest annual household expenditures outside of housing and food.
