Staying Connected as a First-Time Traveller

Posted on March 12, 2025May 2, 2026 By Becky

The first time you step outside your home and head out into the open world is an experience we all cherish. Whether it’s a short trip to the country next door or a long stay on the other side of the planet, the seemingly simple act sticks with us and can hugely inform the person we become. It’s also an act where everyone of us has made a mistake or two along the way.

Mistakes while travelling aren’t necessarily a bad thing. They provide us opportunities to learn and grow, but not all missteps are equally enlightening. Forgetting or misunderstanding how mobile connectivity works when you’re overseas isn’t just inconvenient; it can also leave you unsafe. So, how do you avoid ever learning this lesson the hard way, to ensure the smoothest travel possible?

Plan According to Your Needs

Before looking at your options, you first need to consider your use case. Most travellers will fall into two categories, social media uploaders and more casual users. If you’re into social media and you want to be able to upload while you’re out and about, then higher data speeds are worth the investment. If you’re okay with uploading your videos once you’re back at a hotel, then slower speeds are fine.

In many countries, even the slowest and cheapest plans are enough to enable most common uses without issue, from communication to light entertainment. If you’re a fan of online casino gaming, for example, you won’t have to worry about issues claiming free spins on bingo sites with a slower speed connection. From clicking on and loading cash bonuses and free spins to playing full rounds without disconnects, even speeds of less than 20 Mbps are generally perfectly fine. The same is true for light video streaming and video calls to friends and family back home.

All About the SIMs

The first important thing that new travellers overseas need to understand is that data roaming is rarely the right choice. This is extremely expensive compared to local options, and can even prevent you from signing up for some services.

Instead, the best idea is to look at purchasing a virtual eSIM or physical SIM on arrival. Both can offer similar speeds and access, but this can vary widely depending on the country you’re visiting and the provider. It’s also important to note that some phones only accept eSIMs, so check your needs ahead of time before arriving.

In many cases, you can book SIM cards for pickup on arrival at the airport through online agencies, though this is rarely necessary. International airports will typically feature multiple kiosks selling SIMs and data packages. If you research the different options ahead of time, you can head straight to the one you prefer on landing. These will typically only accept local currency and not cards, so be sure to bring money with you, along with your passport. If you arrive late and the kiosks are closed, most main stores in big cities sell SIMs, or in some tourist-heavy places like Thailand, you can commonly buy SIMs at convenience stores like 711.

Being stuck without access to an internet connection while travelling is mostly avoidable if you plan in advance, so go in prepared, and you’ll never have to manage the stress and frustration it creates. Be proactive, research your options before you land, and you’ll have more time for the things you really want to do.

Protect Your Phone While You Travel

Your phone quickly becomes one of your most important travel tools. From boarding passes and maps to photos and keeping in touch, it’s something you’ll rely on constantly, so it makes sense to keep it safe. From the aesthetic phone cases available to make your phone look pretty and stay protected to ensuring you are covered with a travel VPN, there are plenty of things you could be doing. You want your phone to keep working as it does, right?

Travelling puts your phone at much higher risk than usual. You’ve got busy transport, beaches, unpredictable weather, and those moments where you’re juggling bags while trying to check directions. A cracked screen or damaged phone abroad is not just frustrating, it can genuinely disrupt your trip.

A screen protector is one of the easiest ways to avoid problems. Tempered glass options are especially useful because they absorb impact and help prevent your actual screen from cracking. They’re affordable, easy to apply, and worth having in place before you leave.

A good phone case is just as important. Look for one with shock absorption and slightly raised edges to protect both the screen and camera. If you’re planning anything more active like hiking or beach days, a waterproof or rugged case can give you that extra bit of reassurance.

It’s also worth thinking about how you’ll use your phone day to day. Cases with a better grip or even a strap can help prevent drops when you’re taking photos or navigating on the move. Some people also like wallet-style cases so cards and cash are all in one place.

A little bit of preparation before you travel can save you from dealing with repairs or replacements while you’re away, and helps make sure your phone stays as reliable as everything else you’ve planned.

More Tips for Staying Connected While Travelling

Download Essential Apps Before You Leave

Before you travel, download key apps such as offline maps, translation tools, and messaging platforms. Apps like Google Maps often allow you to download maps for offline use, which can be incredibly helpful if you temporarily lose signal.

Use Public Wi-Fi Carefully

Public Wi-Fi networks in airports, cafés, and hotels can be convenient, but they are not always secure. Avoid accessing banking apps or entering sensitive information while connected to public networks unless you are using a VPN.

Carry a Portable Charger

Using maps, translation apps, and messaging services can drain your phone battery quickly. A portable power bank ensures you stay connected throughout the day, especially during long sightseeing trips.

Share Your Itinerary with Someone at Home

Even if you plan to stay connected regularly, it’s a good idea to share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member. This way, someone knows where you should be in case your connection fails temporarily.

Turn Off Background Data

Some apps consume data even when you’re not actively using them. Turning off background data usage or limiting app updates can help your data package last much longer.

Optional Backup: Use Messaging Apps Instead of SMS

Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, or Telegram use data rather than traditional SMS charges. This can save money and make it easier to stay in touch with people across different countries.
